INTERVIEW
Dr. Robert Pomahac, tell us a little about MaxHealth LA?
MaxHealth LA is a full-service, healthcare center that allows multiple doctors to work together to solve a person’s health problems in a natural, non-invasive way. We offer a wide range of services to help you stay active, strong, and pain free while reducing your risk factors for disease. Our approach is scientific and research-based, using the latest technology for your evaluation and treatments. By giving you access to a variety of disciplines under one roof, your doctors will be working as a team to deliver the best level of care possible.
What’s your background and how you decide to found MaxHealth LA?
I’ve been involved in the health and wellness field for over 20 years. I’ve made it my life mission to study integrative functional medicine and to weave that knowledge as a chiropractor. I am also an ex-professional hockey player and bodybuilder so I know first-hand about the body, how it works, and all the pains and stresses that accompany it. I’ve experienced practically all of them.
My priority is to explain to my patients why they are having whatever health problem they are. Mainstream healthcare generally doesn’t provide this answer. Instead, they focus on providing a patient with the patch, band aid if you will, and not the long-term cure.
My goal is to understand the root cause of the problem, to fully understand what is happening with a patient physiologically. We evaluate up to 30 different bio-markers to completely diagnose the health problem including: poor posture, spinal mis-aligments, body fat, muscle mass and imbalances, core strength, flexibilty and inflammation.
I founded MaxHealthLA as a place for people to get the answer to “why” and find the most effective and least-invasive way to treat it. We offer a variety of services to patients to help address the physiological issues contributing to their health issue, including: chiropractic, acupuncture, physical therapy, massage therapy, functional fitness, nutrition, pain management, and orthopedics.
What are the basic principles of chiropractic care?
Our approach is to fully understand all the contributing factors to your health concerns. Every cell, every tissue, and every muscle are controlled by the nervous system. Mis-alignments in your spine place abnormal pressure on your nervous system and over time affect your body’s ability to manage stress. Then, your body declines to the point where a symptom appears, giving you a warning sign that you are not well. Chiropractic corrects these spinal mis-alignments, optimizing the communication between your brain and body.
What kinds of ailments can chiropractors treat?
The main area that we focus on improving is the neuro-musculo-skeletal systems. Common symptoms chiropractic care can treat are neck pain, back pain, headaches, sciatica, and carpal tunnel. It is also helpful with fatigue, digestive issues, and boosting overall immunity. At MaxHealth LA, we focus on injury and disease prevention as well as lifestyle improvement.
How can people find a good chiropractor?
Do your research. It is important to work with evidence-based chiropractors that perform x-rays prior to treatment. By properly analyzing spinal alignment using an x-ray, chiropractors can more accurately diagnose and treat. Your chiropractor should also be certified in Chiropractic Biophysics technique. CBP emphasizes optimal posture, and spinal alignment, documenting improvements in pain and functional based outcomes.
How did you become interested in being a chiropractor?
I graduated with a degree in pre-med from the University of Waterloo and was originally interested in pursuing orthopedic surgery. I changed my path, however, after accompanying my dad on a chiropractic visit for his lower back pain. I came to the realization that I would rather be helping people with prevention, rather than the last resort, surgical intervention. The more I learned about the chiropractic approach to health and life, the more I realized how much it suited me and my personal goals.
What are typical chiropractic treatments?
A typical treatment of corrective care would consist of the following: electrical stimulation, muscle pressure work, decompression therapy, a chiropractic adjustment, and spinal correction therapy.
What are the similarities between an athletic trainer and a chiropractor?
The main similarity is that both professionals focus on function, helping the person understand their muscle imbalances and the role of physical health.
Who inspired you?
My inspirations are first and foremost my own personal experiences as an ex –athelete, the many wonderful people in my life, and books I have read that have made me into the person I am today. In my practice, I’ve been able to help over 100,000 patients resolve their health problems and live fuller lives. Their success stories have been a source of daily inspiration for me.
What’s a typical work week like?
MaxHealth LA treats roughly 500 people a week across all health care providers. We diagnose patients and implement a treatment plan. We also take the time to teach them how to achieve their health goals. I also lecture to local companies on health and wellness, participate in radio and TV interviews, and contribute to articles. I update my social media outlets personally on a daily basis, communicating everything I can about health and wellness (blog, facebook, twitter).
What do you like about what you do?
Making people happy by opening their eyes to the possibility of a pain-free, healthier existence. By teaching patients about their health, I can help them understand how to make better lifestyle decisions.
What do you dislike?
Other professionals passing judgement on alternative medicine, even though they have no training in this specialty. I often hear, “My doctor told me not to go to a chiropractor.” To me, this is similar to discouraging you from seeing your dentist when you have a cavity. The best results for the patient are seen when alternative and general medicine work as a team, combining the best of what they can both offer. The main goal of all doctors should be to improve the health of the patient and many times that requires co-treating with other practitioners. And that is exactly what we do at MHLA.
What is most challenging about what you do?
Mainstream healthcare tells us that health can be achieved by the medication you put in your body. Adversely, I believe that health is within you and that issues can be addressed from the inside out. My challenge is in teaching others about their power to change their own health trajectory so that they can live a life full of vitality, free from chronic disease and excess medication.
What are your goals/dreams for the future?
My goal is to open up multiple integrative medicine locations in the U.S. providing more complete care options to people suffering from chronic health issues. Addressing their underlying physiological concerns will more effectively combat the biggest epidemics we have as a nation: obesity, diabetes, stroke and heart disease. Many people are still unaware of what an incredible opportunity integrative medicine can provide to help them live the longest and healthiest life possible.
