Grammy winning, Platinum selling music producer Rey Reel, nominated for 3 Grammys this recent award season for his work on Beyonce’s latest self-titled effort, has raised the bar for any and all artists as he’s produced singles such as Beyonce’s “Flawless,” along with the remix featuring Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey’s “Thirsty,” Drake’s “Trophies” and Will.i.am and Britney Spears’ “Scream & Shout” remix- to name a few.
The increasingly sought after beat maker has also produced for Lil Wayne, Diddy, Juicy J, Casey Veggies, Rockie Fresh, Big Sean, DEV, Sage the Gemini, Travi$ Scott, Missy Elliot, Skeme and Robin Thicke. At only 26, Reel has solidified his inherent talent making a name for himself as a member of the Grammy award-winning producer Hit Boy’s syndicate of beat slayers under his imprint, Hits Since ‘87 (HS87).
Currently living in the studio, Reel is working on several, highly anticipated projects releasing this Spring. The musical mastermind has entered the New Year in full force collaborating with new artists creating the magic we all know and love.
INTERVIEW
Hi Rey tell us about you?
I was born in Sacramento, CA but at the age of 7 moved to Inland Empire where ironically I grew up in the same apartment building as Audio Push (at the time known as The Push) and fellow producer Hit-Boy. By 15 I had started producing for Audio push and in 2011 moved to Los Angeles to pursue my career in music production. I’ve been really fortunate to love what I do on a daily basis- producing isn’t a job in my eyes.
How did you start in the business?
I started with the help of Audio Push and Hit-Boy. Living in the same apartment building as them, I was able to learn a lot and realized this is what I’m supposed to do. It came very naturally and I always loved mixing and experimenting with different sounds and beats. Never looked back!
Any member of your family is involved in the music industry?
Nope, just me.
Do you play any instrument?
I play the keyboard and a little bit of the trumpet.
How did you start working with big names in the industry?
I got plugged in initially through Hit-Boy.
What’s the feeling to be nominated for the Grammy’s?
Honestly, words cannot describe the feeling. It’s beyond exciting; I’m so grateful and it still hits me randomly.
Tell us about the process on working on Beyonce hit “Flawless” remix?
Let’s see, the beat was created a few months before we even sent it out to Beyonce. Hit-Boy’s crew played it for her, she liked it and everything flew past me from there. She dropped the album unexpectedly and the rest is history. It was an awesome experience and turned out to be quite the hit.
You also worked with Drake and Mariah Carey, right? How did you got involved?
I met these artists through Hit-Boy.
Now what’s next after working with those big names?
Currently, I’m working on my own project. Fresh and new- I’m really excited about it. Also, I’m stepping up my acting career so hopefully 2015 has a lot in store.
Any future plans you want to share with us?
Aside from continuing to produce, I plan on devoting more time to acting and see where that takes me.
How do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
Successful- not just successful career wise, but on many other levels.
Who do you would love to work with?
I’d love to work with 2 Chainz, Pharrell, Katy Perry and Maddie and Tae. Love all of their work.
What kind of music is your favorite? And which one isn’t?
I like experimental music- I don’t think I really have a least favorite because I haven’t been involved or tried all the genres, so can’t really say which is least favorite.
On your opinion what is the future in the music business?
I can only hope it’s bright and progressive. There’s so much talent out there and if we can all focus on the actual skill set of these artists instead of all the static and distractions, I’d hope time would be on our side for progression.
Tell us about your the acting side?
I’ve loved film and television since I can remember. I’m hoping to be able to focus more time and energy in this department so maybe in a few months- check back with me and I’ll have some updates for you.
What’s your dream in the acting business?
My dream acting-wise is to be well respected in this side of the entertainment industry and to express myself as I do through music, in acting.
If you could work with any actor/actress who will it be, and why?
Honestly, I’m open to working with anyone who has great experience and a lot to learn from.
Are you a movie or tv series fan? (Name your favorites)
Definitely love both. My favorite movie is Goonies and TV show would have to be Martin.
How important is Social Media for actors and producers?
It really depends how you use it. Some positively promote their projects and let their following get to know them, while others use it less beneficially.
Are you a sports fan? (If yes what team or teams do you support)
Basketball all the way. Favorite teams over all are Clippers, Lakers and Kings.
Any hobby?
You know, I always find myself singing in the shower ha. Also, I love playing with my new pup Reyne.
Favorite Book: If I had to choose…Harry Potter. Love me some Harry Potter.
