Earlier this year Colette released her four-song EP Static.Start. on the indie Kawaii Nation label which introduced her fans to her new and radically evolved style that is slowed down and reveals things about herself that she would not think to talk about but musters up the courage to sing about and share herself with her fans. Carr says, “I vowed to grow a pair this time…take chances, reveal my soul, and tell stories about my shitty relationships by tapping into areas that might cause pain.”
The lead single “Static” gained regular rotation on Sirius/XM and the Static.Start. launch party performance at the Sayer’s Club in LA was a sellout performance and earned Colette a spot on iHeart Radio’s 2014 “On the Rise Tour,” with Jake Miller, T. Mills, and Becky G.

How did you get started?
I jumped on stage at a Game concert and spit a freestyle and that was when I realized I found a new love and passion and pursued it full on from that night forward. It was seriously a life changing moment for me. It was as though I finally admitted something to myself that I had been suppressing, and once I had made my mind up about music I completely committed myself to it and haven’t looked back since.
When did you know you wanted to be a singer?
I didn’t even know I could sing until I was signed to Interscope records (as a rapper). I was working in the studio with FrankMusik who couldn’t stand the idea of making a song without any real melody, so he asked me to try to sing some of my lyrics and then he gave me some pointers and it went from there.
Explain your sound in 3 words?
Hi, I’m Colette.
Who are your musical influences?
I love Suzanne Vega, Steve Strange, The Cure, Morrissey, Britney Spears, Dr. Dre, and the list is so long and just goes on and on.
How would you describe your music?
I once heard the saying, “talking about art is like dancing about architecture” and that’s exactly how I feel about trying to describe my music. I know how other people describe it, but I’m not sure how to sum up for myself.
Do you ever get nervous before you are about to perform?
Sometimes I get nervous and then I tell myself that that is silly. Nerves never help a singer, it only tenses them up, makes them forget lyrics, and tightens the neck which leads to bad notes, so I let the butterflies have their flutter for a second and then I tell them to scram, and they listen because my imaginary conversations with metaphoric creatures are very stern and assertive.
Do you have a favorite song? Why?
I love “Achilles Last Stand” by Led Zeppelin. By the time I get to the guitar outro I’m so lost in the feeling of the song, it moves me to a very real place.
Tell us about your upcoming single “Play House”.
I wrote this song about falling in love with a guy who instantly took my breath away. I never wanted to dress up, cook, clean and have human babies so badly, it was the most bizarre feeling. I was the girl that never wore pink as a child and all of the sudden I wanted a big fuchsia bow in my hair and yellow rubber gloves to do dishes with. The song is as if I ripped a page out of my diary and sang it to him. It was so uncomfortable at first but then liberating.
We heard you just shot the music video with acclaimed music video director Shane Drake. What was it like working with him? Can you tell us what the video for “Play House” about?
I love this video! Shane Drake is a legend and was such a pleasure to work with. He really elevated my performance with his energy and experience as a director. The story for the video is for the viewer to interpret. I know what it means to me, but I’m more interested to hear about what each individual person gets out of watching the video. So let me know once you see it!!!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself thanking my family for all their help and them being proud of me for all my hard work.
Any future collaborations you want to share with us?
Ben J from the New Boys and I have a dope track together called “Get Dumb.” This will be our fourth song that we have made together and it’s so much more fun working with friends vs jumping on tracks in a businessy-a&r-strategic way.
What music we can find in your iPod?
You would find a ton of The Smiths, Talking Heads, Suzanne Vega, Eminem and Tinashe among others.
Any loves, other than music?
Tennis is an incredible love of mine and I really enjoy painting and helping others. Another passion of mine, which may seem strange, is that I also love to make soups.
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
I love painting and drawing. I would probably be that girl on the pier drawing caricatures for all of the tourists.
What hidden talents do you have?
I can cook? It’s a talent that is a work in progress.
3 things you can’t leave your house without?
I can’t leave my house without my cell phone, lip-gloss, and a credit card. With those three things, I can conquer just about anything.
What do you like to watch on TV?
I love “Project Runway,” ”’Friends,” “Seinfeld,” and “Chopped Kitchen.”
Best advice ever given?
The best advice I have ever received was from Nick Cannon and it was so simple yet so deep. Any time I would start over thinking, analyzing or second-guessing myself he said to me “do you,” it was his way of reminding me to trust my gut instinct.
Do you support any charity?
I have been working very closely with The Wright Foundation for 10 years now and I helped throw an event for the MS Society. I love the Make-A-Wish foundation and being a plate runner for the “Los Angeles Mission.” I also support Project Mermaids and love any organization that helps keep our beaches clean. My passion is helping wherever and whenever I can.
What do you think of Social Media?
I think social media is excessive, addictive, entertaining and necessary. It is wonderful to be able to connect with so many people all over the world and in so many different ways.
