Ambitious, confident, and one-of-a-kind.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
My biggest influence would have to be my parents- especially my mom. Both my parents have been so incredibly supportive of me and my dreams ever since I was little, and I don’t think I’d be where I am today without them.
How and when did you start into fashion?
I got into fashion at 7 years old, after watching a marathon of Project Runway. I had always loved the arts, but as soon as I discovered the fashion world, I knew that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
What is the biggest highlight of your career so far?
I’ve had so many amazing highlights so far in my career that it’s tough to just pick one! My top two definitely include competing on Project Runway Junior and most recently showing a collection at New York Fashion Week. You can watch my entire NYFW show next![/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6T8HGlVG-I&feature=youtu.be” title=”Matt Sarafa | Fall Winter 2017 Full NYFW Show”][vc_column_text]Now tell us about your fashion lines HOT ME$$ and FAKE, and where we can get it?
HOT ME$$ is my debut fashion line that I released last year for sale to the public on my website mattsarafa.com. That collection was inspired by my time on Project Runway Junior and is full of everyday streetwear pieces that I personally like to wear in my day-to-day life. Recently, I’ve expanded the HOT ME$$ line to include affordable fashionable jewelry, and that has been a huge success.
The FAKE collection is my latest project that I actually just revealed at NYFW last month. This line is inspired by social media and contains higher-end more luxurious pieces. I am currently in production on the FAKE collection, and certain pieces will be up for sale on my website in the upcoming weeks!
What part of your job do you find the most challenging?
The toughest part of my job is probably the whole manufacturing and financial side. Being a fashion designer, I love the creative process but the whole business side of fashion is so foreign to me. Luckily, my dad is a business man so he has helped me tremendously with that. Even though it’s really boring most of the time, I’m learning so much as my company grows.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”21373″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Now tell us about the experience of the New York Fashion Week 2017?
Presenting a collection at my very own New York Fashion Week show was a dream come true. It was an absolutely incredible experience that I never expected to accomplish at 19 years old.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I love Grace Jones. I think she is such a cool person, and I love her super androgynous look. It would be such an honor to work with her.
In five years from now, where do you see yourself and your career?
In 5 years, I see myself continuing to grow my brand. I’ve always said that I wanted to have my own fashion empire like Chanel or Marc Jacobs. I’d love to expand my line to include cosmetics as well.
Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why?
I love designers who aren’t afraid to take risks and push boundaries. Two of my favorites are Moschino and Alexander McQueen.
Do you support any charity?
I’ve been raised in a household where my parents have always stressed the importance of giving back. Since I was little, I’ve been a part of multiple charity organizations from “Children’s Hospital LA” to the “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.” My personal favorite causes to volunteer with are ones who cater specifically to LGBT issues, since that is something so close to my heart.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”21370″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]A perfect Sunday is…?
For me, a perfect Sunday is a mix of relaxation and work. Since I’m a full-time college student, the weekends are when I really get to focus on my career outside of school.
3 things you can’t leave home without?
Phone, Perfume, and lip-gloss
What do you think of Social Media?
I think social media is incredibly important in today’s world because if used strategically, it can play a huge role in your brand. I’ve used platforms like Instagram and YouTube to grow my company and audience, and it has opened up so many opportunities for me.
