Yo! I’m Branan Murphy. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I have a wife and a little girl who is almost one. She is wild. Life is full and beautiful. I grew up in Georgia but I’ve been all over the world, and I’ve been singing my whole life. This year I released my first two singles (“All The Wrong Things” and “Enough”) and they are available everywhere!
What is your musical background?
I have been singing ever since I could talk. Growing up in church is where I really learned how to sing and it was the beginning of my musical education and inspiration. I played trombone in the school band for a while, sang in some school choirs, did some musical theater. I did study music for a year in college too. But I started playing guitar in high school and that’s when I started writing songs. My sound has evolved a lot since then.
Do you have any music influence?
I grew up listening to pretty much all types of popular music – oldies, Motown, grunge rock, country, hip hop, alternative, pop and R&B… So my influences are vast and diverse. The first record I memorized as a kid was Tupac’s Greatest Hits. The first records I bought with my own money were Tim McGraw and Keith Sweat. So, I’m all over the place ha! But if I had to choose my top influences they would be Justin Timberlake and probably Lecrae. Lately, no one inspires me more than Jon Bellion though. Dude is crazy.
What is your next goal as a musician?
My goals for 2018 are to be on a big tour and also put out my first album.
Tell us about your single “Enough”?
I’m very proud of this song for a lot of different reasons. I feel like it really showcases my voice well. I use a lot of different vocal techniques and I loved every part of singing it in the studio. The production is too dope – shout out to my boy Jordan Sapp! He just absolutely killed the track. There are progressive elements in it as well, which is important to me. The song came out of a conversation with one of my friends. He was going through a hard time, just wasn’t satisfied with where he was in life, like we all get sometimes. I came away from it and I had a thought that the hardest thing for the human heart to do is to be content. It’s a problem. No matter what or who we have, too many times it’s not enough. The next day I got in the studio with J Sapp and we wrote the whole thing in like 2 hours. It was just one of those vibes.
Define your music style in 3 words?
Honest. Vulnerable. Diverse.
You have great skills as a vocalist, rapper, songwriter and producer. Which one you prefer if you have to choose one?
That’s actually easy for me. I love all of those things for sure, but nothing makes me come alive like singing. I would rather not choose, but singing definitely wins over all of those.
What are the five things you can’t live without?
Bible, phone, Spotify, SportsCenter, and probably Chipotle
What music do you like?
I like just about everything, but home for me is pop, R&B, and hip hop. I can’t stop listening to Sam Smith’s new record right now (The Thrill Of It All). The whole album is so icy.
Any loves, other then music?
Huge sports fan! No doubt. I grew up in Georgia, so I really love college football and the Georgia Bulldogs. Right now we are #1 in the nation, so I’m loving that. Go Dawgs! I am a big LeBron James fan as well. He is my favorite athlete ever.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I usually do eat pretty clean, so this is a tough question. I will say acai bowls.
And your favorite cheat food?
Ice cream. And pizza.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
In five years I hope to have won a Grammy, or at least been nominated. I hope to be making moves in Top 40 and to be featured on other artists’ projects. It would be dope to get my first acting gig and to sing in a film too. All that in 5 years is no problem, right? Ha! Honestly, I want to take care of my family making music and make them proud, and also inspire people and connect with them in a very real way.
Any exciting news you want to share with us?
I’m playing in Atlanta next week and some friends from college are coming and throwing me a party after. It feels good to be loved.
Best advice ever given?
You are the sum of your 5 closest friends. Choose them wisely.
Your idea of a perfect Sunday is?
Sleep in, church, spend time with my girls, watch a little football, eat good food and chill with good friends or go out in the city (but keep it light)
Do you support any charities?
There are lots of non-profits I believe in. But I would like to shout out one in particular. Adopt Together is an amazing organization that connects families with children in need of adoption. November 9 is World Adoption Day so I would love to make people aware of that and push them to http://adopttogether.org. As an adopted kid myself, I’m very passionate about this, and I hope to work with Adopt Together in the future.
What do you think of Social Media?
As with most things, I think it’s a blessing that can easily become a curse if it’s used in the wrong way… But follow me on the Gram though, for real!
