Well, I’m a native LA girl living in paradise, chasing the dream and enjoying every minute of it!
Describe yourself in three words.
Oh wow, three words… energetic (I’m never tired), silly (anything for a laugh) and fearless (it’s pretty hard to embarrass me)
Who is your biggest supporter?
My entire family is my personal cheerleading squad. I’m an only child but I have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends who support and celebrate me every day. My mom though, is there with me every step of the way, literally. I’m fourteen, so my mom stays with me on set when I’m working, runs my lines with me and drives me to auditions, helps me stay on track with my home schooling, keeps my crazy schedule organized, cooks awesome healthy food and most importantly, makes me laugh.
How did you get started in the industry?
I’ve wanted to act since I was three. I asked my parents how I could be on tv just like the kids on my favorite shows. My parents explained to me that I needed an agent to get auditions. I basically said “sign me up”! But they basically said “not so fast”. They signed me up for community theater when I was four and I ended up doing theater year round until I was ten, even doing Shakespeare camp every summer. When I was ten I was scouted by my current agent in a showcase at my acting school. I had several meetings with different agencies, picked my favorite and started auditioning!
What was your first acting role?
I booked my first job in a commercial for Comcast. It was two or three months after I signed with my agent. Walking onto a set for the first time is kind of a surreal experience. You are greeted, asked what you would like for breakfast, taken to your dressing room or trailer, then into hair and makeup, given your script and as in my case, meeting the other actors for the first time. Sometimes the actors that are cast are not the same actors you auditioned with. It was a one day shoot, but I knew then that’s what I had been waiting to do and never wanted to stop. And it didn’t hurt that there was a Shetland pony on set!
What is the best and worst part of being an actress?
That’s easy… the best part is when you are working, and the worst part is when you are not. I love everything about the process. I love going to acting class, I love auditioning (I actually do), I love hanging out with my friends in acting class, between auditions, and even at auditions. Because we are all about the same age, we end up auditioning for the same roles, and although technically it is a competition, we are all unique and special and know that when a role is right for you, you will book it and your friends will be there to support you. We always are!
Best advice ever given.
It’s actually advice that was given to my mom and dad before I was born. They were on vacation in the Caribbean, exploring the island and meeting many of the locals. They asked their taxi driver how his day was going and he said “well, every day’s a fishin’ day, but not every day’s a catching’ day”. They loved that and quote their driver to this day. It just reminds you to live in the moment and enjoy the ride along the way. Fun fact: My parents were on the island of St. Lucia and I was named after the island. LuLu is short for Lucia. It’s pronounced LOOSHA.
Tell us about your role in Disney’s “Stuck in the Middle”?
Oh wow, being a Disney kid! It’s just the best dream come true. We are in season three now, it’s unbelievable. I play Ellie Peters, the best friend and neighbor of Jenna Ortega’s character, Harley. Ellie is the cutest thing ever, I love her. The producers and writers have created such a lovable, funny and quirky character. Ellie is an only child with a super overprotective mom who lives next door to the Diazes, and lives to be a part of their crazy, chaotic family fun. Of course her mom disapproves, but in the most hilarious way. It’s a huge cast of seven kids and mom and dad, so the set is a kid’s dream. When I’m there I never want to leave!
What has been your most memorable experience from the set so far?
Oh, so many, but probably the fans stand out the most. For the pilot episode we were on location, which means we were not on a sound stage in a studio. Usually when you are on location, fans have some access to watch the filming. The Stuck in the Middle fans have been so supportive from the very beginning. We filmed at a real school in Los Angeles while classes were going on, and the kids were so genuinely interested in what we were doing, so friendly and welcoming. Since then, I continue to be blown away by the love we get from fans. I especially love meeting fans when I’m out and about. Always come over and say “hi”, I’m very friendly. And keep the comments coming on social media, I read them all!
Are you friends with the cast outside the cameras?
Yes! The fun on set continues after the cameras stop rolling. We all go to school together on set, so when we are not on camera we are in school together or eating lunch together. There is also sort of a school yard as well which we usually run over to right after lunch. It’s a time to get fresh air, run around and be silly.
What other projects have you been part of?
I have done a couple of Nickelodeon shows, Mutt & Stuff and AwesomenessTV, as well as tons of sketch comedy shows for DreamworksTV and AwesomenessTV and several commercials. There is also a really great project (I can’t say more) that I have been asked to be a part of which is still in the very early stages. Fingers crossed!
Who is your favorite actor/actress? And why?
I don’t know that I have one favorite. I just respect everyone out there that had a dream, worked hard, put themselves out there with confidence and never gave up. That’s what I look up to, not only in the acting field but in life in general. Athletes, singers, dancers, all artists, entrepreneurs, business executives, politicians, we all have these challenges and successes in common.
3 things you can’t leave your house without?
No surprise here, number one is phone of course, especially if I’m not with my parents. Number two is lip gloss, because nobody wants chapped lips. And number three is a snack in my bag or backpack because well, I’m always hungry.
What music do you like?
I like to check out all the new music all the time. I love to see how artists grow and change and how they express themselves through their music. I also have many friends who are pursuing a singing career and I’m so proud of them. I love music and have played the guitar since I was eight, I only wish I were a better singer. Maybe one of my 2018 goals…
Your idea of a perfect Sunday is?
Anything to do with family and friends. If I’m caught up with school work, I just want to have fun with my family and friends on the weekends. Where we go doesn’t matter as long as we are together. I could sit on a park bench for hours with a friend just talking, laughing and being silly.
How’s a normal day in your life?
A normal day is usually breakfast, schoolwork, an exercise class or a run, lunch, fun time with a friend, dinner, some down time and then bedtime. I’m home schooled so my school time is flexible, for example if I have an audition, need to learn lines or meet with an acting coach, I can do my school work in the evening or double up on some days. On actual work days on set, we have time with our set teacher between filming our scenes every day.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Funny but true, romaine lettuce.
And your favorite cheat food?
No contest, cheese.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope to meet and work with many people in the next five years. The best part of any experience for me is always the people. The people are always what I remember most. I learn so much and grow so much from knowing different people, and my greatest hope is always that people feel the same about me. I love seeing my circle of friends grow. You can’t have enough love and respect in the word, especially now.
Do you support any charities?
Yes! My biggest concerns are bullying and animals. I am partnered with Free2Luv as an activist against bullying and for education of those who need love in their hearts. I also collaborate with Nail and Bone which makes polish for people and donates 20% of sales to dog rescue organizations. Another one close to my heart is my friend’s foundation, Rosie G. Grace Rose is a fourteen year old clothing designer raising awareness for CF through her designs. Go
