[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”27672″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Check our interview with David Cade who is taking over Hollywood as the next top actor, writer, producer soon to be gracing film screens everywhere in his latest project INTO THE ASHES (In Theaters July 19th) alongside Frank Grillo, Marguerite Moreau and Luke Grimes, in one of his grittiest roles to date. The film follows an ex-con adjusting to a normal life in rural Alabama. When a past he thought he left behind comes back to haunt him (enter David Cade), it forces him to come to terms with his current situation and rectify a relationship in his life – all while dealing with his past trying to pull his world apart.
With a television and film career dating back to his first film role in Academy Award-winning MILK, viewers may also recognize David from his other breakout performances including those in “Scrubs,” “Pretty Little Liars,” a memorable four-year stint on “Big Time Rush,” “You’re the Worst,” and “Training Day,” just to name a few. Now in a position to pick quality projects and make them under the umbrella of his production company, North of 84, INTO THE ASHES showcases a grittier side of David playing alongside Frank Grillo in a heart-racing action packed film capturing the essence of a southern psychopath, and quite a departure from his Nickelodeon days.
– INTO THE ASHES will be available in select theatres nationwide on July 19th. –
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”27673″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Hi David, please tell us a little about you?
I’m an actor, singer, writer and producer. I’m a former wrestler, I love boxing, kickboxing, and MMA. I know nothing about football. Don’t judge me.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Driven. Curious. Obsessive.
Name one your strengths?
I’m incapable of quitting. Literally incapable. I don’t stop, I just adapt. I blame wrestling for this. Every time I thought I was exhausted, absolutely couldn’t go further, I would say to myself “just one more minute, one more step, one more”. I carry this mentality with me always.
How did you get started in the industry?
I was studying at The American Conservatory in San Francisco. I booked my first job as an extra on “MILK” where I met Sean Penn. A couple months later, I was recruited to join a band in Los Angeles. That was enough to get me to move, and as soon as I got here, I started going to auditions. The band didn’t work out, but over time I started booking acting jobs, and that evolved into me writing and producing. I’ve never looked back.
What was your first acting role?
As a waiter in “MILK” starring Sean Penn. I got bumped up to a bit part with Steve Spinella when Gus Van Sant noticed me taking orders from the other extra’s. Apparently I started as a method actor… lol
Do you have or had acting classes?
Yes. I studied at the American Conservatory Theater. I also studied for my BFA before that. Warner Loughlin Studios in Los Angeles has been a great home for me.
What is the best and worst part of being an actor?
The best part is the immediate joy of performance, whether you’re on a stage, or film, or even in an audition. The worst part is down time. The ongoing hustle. Lack of access towards the projects you want to do.
Best advice ever given?
“If you wanna work forever, get your friend a job”. That and “Nobody owes you anything. So don’t expect anything you didn’t work for.” Thanks Mom.
How do you prepare for a role?
Depends on the role. Some are easy to tap into, whereas other’s really demand your total focus. So tactics shift. I will say that I’m currently looking for roles that require all of my skill sets to tap into… stuff I can really disappear in. I like to work the physical aspects of characters, but only insofar as I understand the motivations underneath the physicality.
Now tell us about your work in your latest project “Into the Ashes?”
I play Charlie, one of the sociopathic “family” members from Nick’s (Luke Grimes) past. It’s a fascinating role, and one that I really tried to disappear in. It’s a far cry from playing the comedic lead/ handsome guy that I’ve done in the past.[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaROTEO_X44″ title=”INTO THE ASHES Official Trailer (2019) Frank Grillo, Luke Grimes”][vc_column_text]What other projects you have been part of?
I played Jett Stetson on Nickelodeon’s “Big Time Rush” for over four years. That was a real treat. I’ve been the lead in various films, and also a lot of comedies like “You’re the Worst,” “Baby Daddy,” and “Scrubs.” It’s a good balance… I tend to do either comedy or total psychos lol.
And tell us about your production company North of 84?
NORTH OF 84 was put together to help find, funnel, and create interesting content that fits in Hollywood’s ever changing economic landscape. INTO THE ASHES is the companies first project, but there are already 3 more in the works.
What kind of roles do you like or would like to play and why?
The sky’s the limit. I think the most important thing to me is that I’m able to be diverse as an artist. I want to do leading roles, character roles, comedy, drama, theater… Whatever I can find inspiration in. I look up to Hugh Jackman a lot, as his talent allows him to be flexible about the projects he does. This would be ideal for me.
What is next for David Cade in 2019?
I have a film I’ll be acting in this Summer that I’m excited to announce soon. I have another film I’m currently producing that we want in production by the end of the year. Meanwhile, I have a TV show in development that we’re starting to cast. I’m also looking at directing my first project. So it’s a busy time, but very exciting.
And your favorite cheat food?
Burger and fries with a malt shake… I’m drooling
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Five years from now I want to be an ccting/writing/producing MACHINE with multiple projects on TV, my company taking off, and my acting career booming as I get to work with the creators I admire most. I love artists like Jordan Peele or John Krasinski… this is what I want to create for myself.
