Check out our interview with rising R&B singer and songwriter CYM who is taking the world by storm with her refreshing and unique musical style. She has grown from an internationally renowned teen star to a respected solo artist with a refined sound all her own.
Originally from Orlando Florida, home to some of the most talented and popular musical artists in the world, CYM is the daughter of hall-of-fame baseball player Barry Larkin, and musical theater performer and dancer Lisa Larkin.
CYM’s rise on the U.S. music scene began in the fall of 2015 when she moved to New York City and began collaborating with acclaimed producer K Mack (Beyoncé, Diddy, Missy Elliott, etc.). Her debut single “Bombs Away”, produced by Yobo, was released in summer 2016 and received radio station buzz from coast to coast.
In 2018, CYM teamed up with Grammy award-winning producers Ayo N Keyz (Cardi B, Chris Brown, Jaden Smith, etc) to show fans her versatility as an artist with a new musical direction. Her previous record Shadows ultimately didn’t reflect all the aspects of her personality, and her forthcoming record will show off her full artistic range, while revealing her emotional vulnerability. CYM’s latest single “Karma” is a high-spirited R&B track inspired by the frustrations of a one-sided relationship.

Describe yourself in 3 words?
Sweet, edgy, tasteful
Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
My mother has shown me how to be a strong independent woman while giving my love to those who deserve it, while also being a wholehearted human being.
How did you get started in the business?
I have always been on stages performing and singing ever since I was a baby but once I turned 13, I started working in Orlando with a vocal producer named Gerry Williams. He trained me for years until I got the opportunity to go to Brazil to record a track with one of the top DJ’s “Mister Jam” and after that my career took off.
Did you go to music school?
I went to acting school when I was younger. I took dance and voice at Spotlight Dance Center until I started working with Gerry Williams.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Current, Vibey*, catchy
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I’ve always been a performer. When I was a kid my sister would dress me up in different outfits and make videos of me singing different songs while running around on stage. I loved Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, TLC, Destiny’s Child, Missy Elliot, Ciara, literally everything 90’s/ 2000’s.

Now tell us about your new single “Karma?”
Oooo Karma Karma Karma.. I have been waiting so long to put this song out. It’s about a one-sided relationship that I had enough of. You know when you give and give to someone who doesn’t even see how much you’re doing for them and continues to give you the same BS over and over again.. wellllll that’s when karma starts to come into play. Basically, I’m like, “okay I’m done…,” and you’ll get what you deserve” moment lol.

And about “Love CYM?”
Love Cym is my first EP written all by me and my closest loved ones. Each song is a love or loss letter to who the song is written about. It’s raw, deep, and emotional with a witty twist. You have to listen closely to really understand to 2 sided meaning of each song *wink wink*
Now tell us the success of hits like “Bombs Away?”
Bombs away was my first single I released after moving to NYC. I was an amazing experience shooting with award winning directors , holding auditions with my Choreographer Brian Drake to cast our dancers, collaborating with my sister on ideas for styling and make up and watching it all come together! I never thought that I was going to get the feed back that I received from it!
How was working with Ayo N Keyz?
I’ve been working with Ayo n Keyz for almost 2 years now. They truly are a blessing to work with. They let me be my true self when it comes to lyrics, vibes, and sounds while helping me make it all cohesive. They have given me the freedom to express myself and that it all I have ever asked for as an artist.
