Check out our interview with talented NYC based singer-songwriter Ava Heatley.
Ava has been writing songs since she was thirteen years old. She takes her love of classic rock grooves, powerful piano ballads, and blunt, straightforward lyricism to create her own unique style and sound. Born Music Online describes her music as “Raw, authentic, and beautifully self-aware”.
She has released 3 EPs the most recent being “Beautiful/Terrifying” streaming everywhere now. She plays stripped-down and intimate piano and vocal sets as well as lively, sing-a-long filled, full band sets all throughout New York City. You can catch her at venues like Pianos, Rockwood Music Hall, The Delancey, The Bowery Electric, and The Bitter End.

Hi Ava, please tell us a little about you?
I’m a 24 year old piano playing singer songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY.
How did you get started in the business?
I initially started getting into music through theater. I took piano and voice lessons and did a lot of musicals. Then one day my mom introduced me to the world of singer-songwriters with people like Ben Folds, Carole King, and Elton John and I knew that was what I wanted to do.
Did you go to music school?
Yes I went to SUNY Purchase and studied music composition.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Rock, pop, sadness.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Ben Folds is the artist that first got me to write music. His music can be funny or beautiful or heartbreaking or silly, or all of those things all at once. It really inspired me to write music that truly reflected life’s contradictory and complex emotions.
Do you ever get nervous?
I am perpetually nervous.
Now tell us about your new single “Party”?
Party is a song about anxiety. It’s about trying your hardest to assimilate to the life you feel like you should be living and the life all your friends are living and feeling disappointed when you get in the way of yourself.
What we can expect of Ava Heatley in 2019/2020?
I’m working toward another EP in 2020 and lots of live shows.
What is you favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Anything by Alanis Morissette.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Taylor Swift. She is an artist who will be around for a long time because she understands the industry, her fans and herself in a way that allows her to create and market her music so successfully.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I love pops of color. Most of my outfits- especially on stage are based around a pop of bright color surrounded by a lot of black.
