Hi Vlad, please tell us a little about you?
I’m 24 years old, originally from Russia, grew up in NJ, now pursuing my dreams in LA. I grew up competing professionally in ballroom dancing, wining my first national title at the age of 14 and representing the U.S at all the major world events. I went to Montclair State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Finance.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Enthusiastic
Empathetic
Analytical
Who was your role model as a child?
My mom and dad, who sacrificed quite literally everything so that my brother and I can live a beautiful life in America. They’re the purest example of perseverance and because of them I’m the man I am today.
When did you start dancing?
I started ballroom dancing when I was eight years old in NJ. Maks and Val from DWTS were my first coaches and I couldn’t have been luckier to have grown up in their studio. That place was special… Shout out to Rising Stars Dance Academy.
How has this changed your life?
Dancing for me is a lot more than just movement and steps, it’s an art form that pushed me out of my comfort zone on so many levels. It has taught me the true essence of hard work, dedication, and passion. Dancing quickly became my outlet of expression where connecting with people with my dancing fueled me and gave me a sense of responsibility. I’m able to touch, move, and inspire with my craft and make a living out of it! It’s a beautiful thing and I’m lucky that I get to do it every day.
Tell us about your work on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars?”
It’s truly a dream come true. I vividly remember watching my mentors on the show and telling my young self that one day I’ll be right there on that screen. I’ve been on the show for two seasons as a troupe dancer and It’s everything I ever imagined and more. Performing for millions of people in their living room screens is surreal, as much as it is meeting some of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever met.
What was it like to be on FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance?”
Exhausting! But incredibly rewarding. Rounds after rounds of learning all different types of choreography in all different styles of dancing was physically and mentally draining. However, it was one of the most groundbreaking experiences for me personally as a performer. It definitely taught me how to embrace my vulnerability and just from that short-time experience I felt like I grew a years’ worth of performing. Unfortunately, during the contemporary round I separated my AC joint, but was still able to make it to the top 20.
How was performing on The Kelly Clarkson Show?
So much fun! It was their Halloween special so I was dressed up as a zombie butler dancing to her live version of “I Put A Spell On You.” Hearing Kelly’s voice live for the first time was mind blowing.
What other projects you have been part of?
Most of my dancing growing up was competitive where I would travel from state to state and internationally representing the U.S at all the major events in the world. After slowing down with competitions, I jumped on a few dance tours including “Confidential” and “Our Way.” Recently, I appeared on an episode of Fuller House and been assisting and choreographing for shows like “Flirty Dancing” and “Why Women Kill.”
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Making people smile and having a positive impact on their lives.
What is your favorite dance style?
Ballroom Latin is my favorite dance style, but that’s me being a little biased. Hip-hop is my second love – I’m all about the vibe and the grooves just make me feel good inside.
How would you explain your fashion style?
I like to switch it up from baggy to classy.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
Looking down at your phone and not being present.
How would your best friend describe you?
“Dedicated, passionate, and determined – for as long as I can remember. Also, a family man.”
Not mad at that…
What’s next for Vlad Kvartin in 2019/2020?
I got my eyes on the prize for season 17 of SYTYCD.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Being yourself surrounded by people that love you the most.
How is a normal day in your life?
I’m literally always dancing. If I’m not working on a show, I’m teaching dance, or taking class, or training with a dance partner and creating concept videos.
What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
Anything outdoorsy and active with friends like playing basketball, hiking, or hanging at the beach.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Mac Miller. I share a lot of nostalgic moments with my friends from high school bumping to his music. I was a big fan and was heartbroken to see him go.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Avocado toast.
And your favorite cheat food?
Pizza.
Best advice ever given?
How you do anything is how you do everything.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
Still dancing and making people smile, but on a larger scale. I see myself playing a recurring acting/dance role on a TV series.
What music do you like?
I love music that blends genres together like Jazz, Hip-hop, House, Soul. Artists like Masego, Anderson Paak, Kaytranada are some of my favorites that do that. But when dancing, I’m all about that authentic Spanish music to artists like Gypsy Kings and Jose Feliciano.
What do you think of Social Media?
I think it’s an incredible platform to express yourself and connect with people, but can negatively affect your mental if you become dependent on it.
