Hi Alexis, please tell us a little about you?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and self-taught musician! I got my start in the industry at the age of 16 and had the honor to sign with Multi-Platinum Record Producer, Andrew Lane, last August! I’m also a Computer Engineering major!
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Determined, Passionate, and Caring are 3 words I’d use to describe myself for sure!
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I got my start in the industry at 16! I was putting out singing covers on Instagram and a talent scout saw me and recommended me to Nashville Producer, Shannon McArthur. I got on a Skype call with me and we decided we wanted to work with him and ever since I’ve been working on my career!
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Versatile, Raw, and Powerful are 3 words I would use to describe myself.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
My biggest musical influence I’d have to say is Ed Sheeran! I love how he writes from his heart and shared stories! As an artist, I strive to do the same and write stories and messages that mean something. As for how I got into music, I just have always had a live for music and have known I’ve wanted to do music my entire life. There’s always been a song in my heart.
Do you play any instrument?
I taught myself to play ukulele at the age of 15 actually! I can also play a little bit of guitar and sometimes can learn simple things on the piano!
Do you ever get nervous?
I get nervous sometimes but not very often! The stage is like a second home for me so whenever I start singing I know I’m in my element and I’m ready to go!
Tell us about your newest single For You?
My newest single “For You” is one of the most meaningful songs I’ve written and recorded thus far. Andrew called me up one day and said he was going to send me a track to write to about the current situation going on in our world with all of the protests and I fell in love with the idea. For me, the best way to share a message is with music. I wanted to show my support and love by writing a song to show that I stand with those in the black community and will speak for those who need someone to stand for them so their lives can truly matter.
What’s the story behind this song?
The story behind the song is to show that if someone can’t speak for themself, I’ll stand with you and fight for you and if they can I will fight along with them. I want to see equality in the world. I want people to find comfort in knowing someone out there cares about them and sees their struggles and wants the world to be better for them. The song shows my desire to have everyone come together to make this world a better place for everyone, especially those still fighting for the same rights and justices that others have. I also hope anyone who can’t relate to this particular story can find comfort in the song and relate it to their lives to feel the same message.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what is not?
One of the most rewarding things about what I do is getting to hear all of the positive reactions people have had with me and music. I’ve had so many people tell me how much I inspire them and how much they love my music and find comfort in it and it makes me so happy because I’ve always wanted to do that for others. It’s also really fun to interact with fans because there are some super sweet kids out there who look up to me. I also love performing because music is my passion in life and performing is one of my favorite things. One of the not so fun parts of my music can be the stresses of everything such as a lack of time or making sure my music is heard because I’ve put so much into this and it can be tiring sometimes but I always find comfort in my music and continue on.
What are the five things you cannot live without?
Five things I can’t live without would be my family, my friends, music, my car, and my phone.
What’s next for Alexis Marrero in 2020?
Well with all of the uncertainty in the world right now, it’s hard to really say what’s next for me in 2020. We had a lot of big opportunities come but fall through due to the pandemic going on but you can be sure to hear new music and see some more collabs to come! I would like to hope there will be some more opportunities by the end of the year, especially to perform, but we will have to see what happens but i’m the mean time I’ll be continuing to work on music and will be returning back to school in the fall!
What is you favorite song? And why?
My favorite song of all time has to be “Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis Presley. He’s one of my favorite singers of all time and I just think that song is so beautiful and always puts a smile on my face!
What book should every entrepreneur read?
I don’t read many books for entrepreneurs but one book I have read for artists and entrepreneurs is “Steak Like An Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative” by Austin Kleon! It’s a great book chalked full of important advice for creative people!
What is the toughest decision you had to make in the last few months?
The toughest decision I’ve had to make in the last couple of months has been what happens next with music. With so much uncertainty in the world we definitely didn’t know how it would affect my music but I have the drive and I’m not giving up!
Any loves other than music?
I love video games and snowboarding for sure! I also have a huge love for sports and grew up on the volleyball court and on the softball field! I was pretty invested into sports growing up and now that I’m not playing anymore, I coach them!
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would want to meet Elvis Presley because I have always admired Elvis’ sound! I love how versatile and unique his sound is and I find inspiration in that to be versatile as well!
Best advice ever given?
The best advice I’ve ever been given is from my old engineer G. In a time of uncertainty in my music, he reminded me to make my own opportunities and to continue on. He told me to not let anything ruin my passion and to push forward, even if it was with a new team. He inspired me to not give up and I will forever be thankful for him.
How is a typical day in your life?
A typical day in my life right now is to work on social media and other music things for a couple of hours and then I’ll hang out with friends or family and work on music for at least two more hours by the end of the day.
Name one your strengths?
One of my strengths is definitely that I am really good at memorizing lyrics which comes in handy when it’s time to perform!
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
A perfect Sunday for me would be to just relax and hang out with friends and go on a drive while jamming to music!
What is you favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
I definitely have a couple that I love to belt out in the car but my go to is honestly anything Lewis Capaldi. He’s one of my favorite artists and I love his music so much! I can’t help but sing at least ken if his songs once a day!
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is being in the presence of people I love and care about. It also is making music that hold a powerful message.
Do you support any charities?
At the moment I don’t support any charities but would love to support some in the near future!
What is your favorite food?
I really love pasta! I’m part Italian so any Italian food I usually love!
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
I think a deal breaker for me is dry conversation. I’m super talkative so if the conversation is boring it wouldn’t work for me.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself performing on the biggest stages in the world in 5 years! I want to make it big in the industry and inspire people with my music!
How would you describe your fashion style?
On an everyday basis, I’m a very causal person and wear comfortable clothes. In my music, I’m huge on jackets and jeans. I have a huge collection of jackets and I love how they can make a simple shirt pop!
What do you think of Social Media?
I think social media is such a great concept and can be super fun! It’s helped me to keep in touch and meet so many people on my life and I love that. It has also helped to grow my music and got me discovered so I think it can be a beautiful thing for sure! I also know there’s a lot of haters, bullies, and creeps on social media and it can be a tough place to be, especially for some of my fans who get lots of hate and bullying because people can just hide behind a screen and say things they wouldn’t say to their faces but that’s just something that comes with it.
