Hi Megan, please tell us a little about you?
Hi! I’m born and raised in a very close knit family in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. I grew up surrounded by nature and I’ve been writing songs since I was about 7 years old.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Loyal, caring, and optimistic.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I travelled to Toronto for a showcase after a lot of encouragement from my mum. There, I met an amazing vocal coach who, in turn, exposed me to a great opportunity with talent scouts in Nashville. They ended up connecting me with amazing creators and all aspects of the music creating process. Looking back, it was really a blessing.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Soulful, Rootsy and Honest.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Tom Petty has been a great influence on me. I chose to make music as a vehicle and a means to impact on those in need. Creating higher awareness for issues like mental health and advocating for causes that are overlooked.
Do you play any instrument?
I play the base notes on my acoustic guitar to help me in my song writing process. My fellow songwriting friends dubbed me “The One String Wonder.”
Do you ever get nervous?
I do. My songs are like journal entries that I sing out loud hoping people will connect with them. That can be kind of scary at times.
Tell us about your debut EP “This Was Then”
I’m super excited to finally share this body of my work! It feels like it’s been a long time coming.
And about your song “The Joker?”
Watching the movie hit me at a gutteral level. I was so moved by what I saw on the screen in front of me that I had to go home and pour all of the emotions I was feeling into this song. I hope others will be able to identify with it and know in times of adversity they are not alone.
What’s the story behind this album and the songs?
All of the songs, with the exception of “The Joker,” were inspired by feelings and moments I experienced 2-3 years ago during a real transition period of my life. I originally planned on releasing the songs one at a time, but then decided it felt best to release them as a body of work. It’s almost like each song is like a different chapter in the same book.
Did you had plans/concerts planned and cancelled because of COVID? If so have you done any online concerts or interaction with your fans?
I did have shows that were cancelled because of COVID. When it comes to online concerts, I was asked to perform for a charity event held by the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay. Also, I was asked to perform for an at-home gala held by United Way in Thunder Bay! The event raised over $27,000 for the local COVID relief fund to support frontline workers.I felt honoured that I was able to be a part of it!
Which project is still on your bucket list?
I have quite a few projects on my bucket list, but one that I would love to check off is having the opportunity to write with Lady Gaga. Sounds crazy, I know, but crazier things have happened!
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
I love that I get to connect with people through my music – from shows or just listening. I also love that I’ve been able to mix my love of music with causes that are important to me.
What’s next for Megan Nadin in the last months of 2020?
Staying busy in the studio while I patiently wait for touring to be an option again! In the meantime, I’ll be writing, recording, creating, and finding new ways to connect with people and raise awareness with the help of my music.
Any loves other than music?
I LOVE to cook! I can really cook just about anything.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Jim Carrey. He’s talented as an actor and as an artist. He just seems like such a genuine human being. I’ve learnt a lot from him just by watching interviews and documentaries. The idea of sitting down and just talking to him about life, manifesting and everything in between sounds like a dream.
Best advice ever given?
Keep showing up, even when it’s hard and even when you don’t feel like it!
How’s a typical day in your life?
Wake up and take my vitamins. Spend 5 minutes meditating. Go over my vision board. Get in my workout. Head to the studio where I do some writing and recording. Connect with family and friends when I have the chance throughout the day. I love cooking so when I come home from the studio I always look forward to my time in the kitchen. Then I relax, unwind, and get ready to do it all again the next day!
Name one your strengths?
I’m very empathic and loyal.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
Waking up, getting in my work out, spending time in nature or with friends, making myself an easy, but tasty dinner, and ending it with a hot shower and cozy pj’s.
What is you favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
“I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado or anything by Kanye West.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Being content in my own skin and having a sense of self-love and self-worth
Do you support any charities?
Yes, I’ve been a supporter of “Sick Kids” for over five years now. I am recently a supporter of “MADD”, “DARE,” and “Black Lives Matter”. Also, I volunteer with different charities when I have the opportunity.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I’m in love with pan seared salmon and roasted veggies. I’m also a sucker for a good salad, topped with roasted veggies and all the fixings with the old school – simple but dang good – oil and vinegar dressing.
And your favorite cheat food?
I don’t really use the term “cheat food,” but my favourite treats would be loaded nachos, fried chicken, or something chocolaty. Or a strawberry milkshake!
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
Someone that comes off as arrogant, rude, or vein..or if they chew with their mouth open.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself writing, recording, creating, and being in a place where my music and advocacy fall, allowing me to make a difference on levels that I used to dream about. Also, I see myself with a kind, sexy, hardworking life partner who believes in philanthropy and the importance of family.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I’d describe it as bold and fun, yet sophisticated.
What do you think of Social Media?
I understand it and appreciate some aspects of it, but I’m not the biggest fan. I like that it allows us to connect with people from near and far, and that it provides people with a platform to make positive impacts. I don’t much care for how it seems to be the centre of the universe at the moment. So much is driven by social media. I’m an old soul so I kind of struggle with that at times.
