Any loves other than music?
I really love working with and training dogs, particularly my dog Monty. I also love any kind of mind puzzle like an escape room, murder mystery party, or game show.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Maybe the Pointillist Georges Seurat so that I could ask him about his process which I find mind-blowing. I am also open to an invitation for a conversation with anyone from a secret society. I have questions….
Best advice ever given?
My dad has advised me that, “If you are the smartest person in the room you need to find a new room.” It can be comforting to be around people that you know you can consistently impress but it is really important to allow yourself to grow by putting yourself in situations that stretch you.
What is a typical day in your life?
Before quarantine, I would have said there isn’t a typical day. Some days I’ll have a rehearsal or a writing or recording session; other days I may have a choreography session or vocal lesson to continue to push myself. I have found that working out every day helps me feel ready for whatever the day may bring.
Name one of your strengths and explain why it is a strength of yours.
One of my strengths is my storytelling, which is reflected in my song lyrics. I make it a priority when writing lyrics to find a balance between providing enough information to set the scene for listeners and leaving enough room for those listeners to insert their own details so the song can feel like their story as well as mine.
Your new single “Exhale” surrounds the theme of mental health. Why is it important to you to release a song around this message?
A number of my fans have shared with me that their family members either don’t understand or sometimes even “believe in” the mental health struggles that they are battling. I hope that this song not only helps listeners to recognize they are not alone, but also helps to normalize conversations around mental health so that listeners feel more comfortable self-advocating for the support they may need from those around them.
How would you describe your fashion style?
Evolving. What is important to me about fashion is that it makes me feel strong, powerful and confident.
You have a close relationship with fashion designer, Nicholas K. How did the relationship come about and are you able to tease an upcoming project with her?
I’m blessed to have a team of incredibly smart women and one of those women, my manager El, connected me to the creative powerhouse that is Nicolas K. All I can say is that I have a Zoom fitting tomorrow with Nicholas and we have an exciting project in the works.
Your upcoming docuseries Chart Breakers has been in the works. What are you most excited to share in the docuseries? When can we expect to see it?
I am excited for music fans to see “behind the curtain” to witness what it takes to create a hit song from different perspectives. I have learned so much from everyone I have worked with as part of this docuseries, like on-the-rise artist iNTeLL of 2ndgenerationwu (new album We Here Now out now); viral YouTube singer/actor/comedian, Chris Mann (new single “Good Days” out now); mega producer 88-Keys; songwriter Maize, and writer/producer Troy Samuela of Greg Kurstin’s group, No Expectations. I feel so incredibly fortunate to be on this journey, and to do so while being mentored by Grammy-winning producer and hitmaker, Sandy Vee, has been a dream come true. Like many others, we have experienced delays due to the pandemic, but we are excited to begin releasing teaser clips early next year and to wrap production on the series.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
My perfect Sunday involves self-care, like face masks and bath bombs.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
For belting out in the car, “Hold On” by Wilson Phillips and for karaoke, something by either Adele or Sam Smith.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness is the enjoyment that my rescue dog, Monty, gets any and every time he eats. It reminds me to appreciate my blessings rather than focus on the things that may not be going perfectly according to plan.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Right now, just surviving COVID and getting back to a semblance of normalcy sounds great. I really miss being in studio writing with my collaborators. While my team and I certainly have long term goals, I feel like when you set your sights so firmly on what success looks like, you close yourself off to opportunities for other kinds of success that can surprise you.
