Describe yourself in 3 words?
Authentic, Supportive, Fearless
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I started out by writing poetry. I decided to turn some of them into songs. I created a demo. I sent the demo out to the internet. I was picked up by Tate Music Group. I left them after a couple of months, because I was doing everything myself. I started to google places where I can submit my music and the rest is history.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Truthful, Deep, Unique
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
My father, Guy R. Jean, a Haitian artist and my mother Marie-Louise Jean influenced me to make music. I was going through some times and they thought that this would help me. Music has been my saving grace.
Do you play any instrument?
No. But I am going to learn to play the piano.
Do you ever get nervous?
When I decided to go into music, I never thought that I would be able to perform on stage. I used to be very shy. But because of my love for music, I feel very comfortable being on stage….I feel like I am home.
Tell us about your new single “I AM?”
“I Am” is a song about being black in America. It is about being fearless in the face of hate. I refuse to give in to those that want to hate me, because of who I was born to be.
What’s the story behind this song?
I wanted to write a song about racism, but I wanted to do it in a different way. I wanted an Americana vibe and I wanted to make sure that it was authentic. I did the song in one take when I was in the studio. It is my anthem.
Did you had plans/concerts planned and cancelled because of COVID? If so have you done any online concerts or interaction with your fans?
I had one performance scheduled with a few friends. Bsquared Management has been able to get me some livestreaming gigs.
Which project is still on your bucket list?
My tour “Where Do We Go From Here?” is on my bucket list.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
Meeting new people in the industry. The amazing music that comes out of collaborations. What is not rewarding is the scammers and the people that use you.
What’s next for Natalie Jean in 2021?
I am working on a couple of collaborations, a new album, and a new business venture.
What is your favorite song? And why?
We Belong by Pat Benatar. I love the vocals and the message of the song.
Any loves other than music?
I love spirituality. I love to learn about meditating and being still.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to have met Nina Simone. She was force to be reckoned with. She demanded and commanded that people listen to her. She never wanted to be background noise. She also sang and wrote message songs. She wasn’t afraid to sing about her truth and make a statement.
Best advice ever given?
Never allow anyone to walk all over you.
