Check out our interview with Emmy award-winning actress, singer, teacher, author and model Patrice Covington who is best known for her role as Squeak in the 2015 Broadway revival of The Color Purple and has traveled the world providing background vocals for legendary performers like Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera, among others.
Patrice is getting ready to make her television series debut in the highly anticipated NatGeo anthology series “Genius: Aretha.” Patrice will be playing Erma Franklin, legendary singer activist and singer to Aretha Franklin played by Cynthia Erivo and also stars Courtney B. Vance. The show will premiere on March 21 and will run as a limited series over four nights.

Describe yourself in 3 words?
Ambitious, talented, overcomer.
How did you get started into acting?
I was always involved in the arts as a child. I was in church choir, church theater, community theater and graduated from a performing arts high school.
How has this changed your life?
It’s a real life manifestation. My dream come true. My perfectly ordained and timed break into the television industry.
What is the best and worst part of being an actress?
The best part is that I get to do healing through art while having the time of my life. The worst is probably scheduling. I have missed many milestone events in my friends and families lives due to rehearsal, performances, or filming.
How do you prepare for your role in “Genius: Aretha”?
Youtube University!
What other projects you have been part of?
First TV show but have an Emmy for The Color Purple on Broadway.
What kind of roles do you like or would like to play and why?
I always want to be a part of shows that heal and change people from the inside out.
Now tell us about your work as Squeak in the 2015 Broadway revival of The Color Purple?
Squeak was a blast. The color purple was always a good idea. We changed lives on and off stage nightly.
Are you focusing your career towards TV now or are you still thinking of continue your musical and modeling careers?
TV and Film are currently my focus but theater and music will always be a part of my life and career.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
My mama getting to see that her investments were worth it and that she didn’t waste her money! LOL
Which project is still on your bucket list?
There are several upcoming projects I am excited about potentially being a part of. So many new woman and people of color creating amazing things. Until then, I’ll say I will say YES really fast to a role on This Is Us. Love that show.
How would your best friend describe you?
I texted her and she said “Loving, fiery, and sensitive”. I’ll take that.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
I am a Memoir reader. I love reading the stories of women who’s art and careers I admire. I always learn that I am not alone in my journey. Nothing is new!

More TV and film and more music!
What is your favorite healthy food?
Massaged Kale and right now I am kinda obsessed with barramundi fish!

How would you explain your fashion style?

What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness is the feeling that makes you have zero doubts that all is right in that moment in time.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Whitney Houston! I feel like she taught me how to sing. I just love her and she will live on forever.

Continuing to tell stories that shape and heal the lives of all.

Somewhere over the rainbow. A song of hope and joy! A song that speaks things into existence and gives light to hopes and dreams.
What do you think of Social Media?
I love it! It can be addicting. I am grateful for it. I feel I get to experience moments in peoples lives that I wouldn’t normally get to experience because of scheduling or distance.
