Hi Damon, please tell us a little about you?
I am a fun loving guy who is fortunate enough to be living his dream. I’m living my dream as an artist and I curate my own party playlist with songs that I’ve worked hard on.
How did you get started in the business?
It all began in December of 2019 when I watched Ushers masterclass for the first time. Then funny enough I actually ended up crossing paths with LLCoolJ who gave me words of inspiration to push forward. It’s funny because I was sitting at the Ronald Reagan Washington Airport watching Usher’s MasterClass when he came over and sat next to me. Those two gave me the words and tools to really push myself during the pandemic to follow my dreams and make my own music.
How has this changed your life?
To be honest aside from having people view me differently now, my life hasn’t changed much.. However, I will say I’ve come a long way from the start of the pandemic when I made videos on my building’s rooftop for fun. Through it all I’ve remained the same fun loving guy.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
First things first just like any other artist I had to put in the work, which to me making music has always been something fun. Then once I created my first track, Hustle with a Purpose Featuring the Crushboys, I started catching the attention of people in the industry. Then before you know it one thing led to another and Cupid agreed to hop on a track with me, which ended up impressing the likes of Ne-Yo and Zaytoven. Now we’re here.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Charismatic, Inspirational, Danceable
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Usher has been one of the biggest influences in my life, in regards to music. I am beyond grateful for his masterclass, which has given me the motivation to pursue my own goals and dreams within the music industry. He made music sound really easy and I’m appreciative that he put that information out into the world for people like myself to be able to pick up.
Tell us about your hit single “Catchin Dreams?”
“Catchin Dreams” is the story of me finding myself during the pandemic and living out a dream of mine that had been put on hold for so long. It was inspired by Calvin Harris’ track “Let Go” featuring Ne-Yo. I really wanted to reproduce that high energy feeling that you get when you listen to that song. Inspired by “ Let Go,” American Idol Finalist, Robbie Rosen and I got together and started writing “Catchin Dreams.” His sound proved to be a perfect fit and was the final piece in bringing this track to life. Unfortunately, due to covid Robbie wasn’t able to appear in the video.
What’s the story behind the song?
The story behind the song is the story of my success in the industry. I keep chasing my dreams and turning the impossible into possible.I wanted to make a track that expresses the joy I’ve felt throughout my experience as an artist. From the feedback that I’ve gotten so far I think I have accomplished that.
Now tell us about the success of your single “2miles” Featuring the Crushboys?
“2 Miles” was such a pleasant surprise. My intentions for the song were to get people to understand you can go anywhere you want, the world is yours. Life is about experiences, traveling provides such a wealth of knowledge and allows you to understand the world better. I am glad to see so many people use the message of the song as an anthem for their travels.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
The most rewarding part of my work has been hearing from people how my music has changed their lives And has inspired them to keep making positive changes in their life and chase their dreams. Paying it forward is the most rewarding part of this whole experience and it’s so easy to do.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
The greatest lesson that I learned so far it’s just trust and believe in yourself and learn to tune out the negativity and just keep going.
What’s next for Damon Fletcher in 2021?
Currently I am working with Grammy winning producer, Zaytoven on some music. I also have a project with Bow Wow coming. I will see what develops and take it from there and just continue to have fun along the way.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is waking up every day and no matter the situation, being able to choose to do the things that you love through it all.
Best advice ever given?
“If you can dream it you can accomplish it” those are the words of LL COOL J
Do you support any charity?
I don’t support a particular charity as a whole at the moment, however I have been putting the building blocks in place to start a foundation to support future generations. When I started making music I also started giving. I ran a contest to give a scholarship to a class of 2020 graduate to promote “Hustle with a Purpose”, gave away a trip for two to go anywhere in the world to show that “2 Miles” really can take you anywhere. My latest giveaway was a trip for two to Vegas to come with me to meet the inspiration himself, Usher! It has been so fulfilling to see the winners of each of the contests thrive after the experience.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
That’s a tough question to answer because I did not see this coming. What I have learned from this whole experience is to just do the things that you love and enjoy and continue to follow that and you never know where that path just might take you.
Favorite song? Why?
My favorite song of all time is Usher’s Yeah! That Song Takes me back to Cancun, Spring Break 2004. So many good memories from that song, which carried on over and served as an inspiration to my song “Ready”. I was proud to be able to have that moment and to be able to tell Usher about that face to face when we first met was truly unforgettable.
