Hi Emmy, please tell us a little about you?
Hi guys! My name is Emmy Law – I’m a singer-songwriter based in Nashville, TN. I teach music lessons, stream on Twitch, write songs, and hang with my cat Bones Franklin. I’m very thankful to be in Nashville, surrounded by so much creativity. Life is good.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Dorky, driven, creative
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
When I graduated college, I realized the dream in my heart was to make music…so I started on that journey (which I knew nothing about). No one in my life was really pursuing a music career, so I was making mistakes and learning from them all over the place! I don’t think that will ever stop.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Sweet, dreamy, haunting
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I’ve been heavily influenced by the band Copeland, the Avett Brothers, Damien Rice, Ingrid Michaelson, Sara Bareilles, and others. I grew up getting lost in beautiful songs, and I feel it’s still my dream to make beautiful songs like that ones I grew up hearing…haven’t made it there yet, but one day. I chose music because there really hasn’t been another option for me…it’s what I give my heart and soul to naturally.
Do you play any instrument?
Yes, I play the guitar, piano, ukulele, and I’m learning the dulcimer.
Do you ever get nervous?
I do, but not nearly as much as I used to! When I first started playing shows in Atlanta, I used to get so nervous I could barely sing like myself. My voice would get really high and shaky…and of course all my friends were coming to these shows. It took me four years of playing out in Atlanta to really get to the point that I could perform live and actually sound like myself.
Tell us about your new single “I Don’t Want It?”
I love this song! I wrote it when I wasn’t even sitting down to write a song – I love when that happens. The song ended up being about strength – standing up against something that’s not good for you. It takes courage to face that. The song is in the context of a relationship, but I envision it being about any toxic situation you need to get out of. I collaborated with producer Shane Becker – it’s our second song together. I absolutely love his work, I think he’s so talented! I can’t wait to do more tracks with him.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Definitely sharing it with others. I get to bring songs from my living room to people out in the world. There’s nothing like it – whether my music ever “takes off” to a high level or not, I will always feel immense gratitude that I get the freedom to share my art.
What would say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
I’ve learned many lessons….the best music is created when I’m being myself and not trying to sound like something or someone. Being fiercely authentic actually does takes WORK. Hearing “no” and getting instructive criticism can be so valuable, if you pay attention.
How would your best friend describe you?
Haha, well….sometimes I don’t know how to chill and have fun – got too many to-do lists! 🙂 I’m a pain to go out to eat with because I have a lot of dietary restrictions….and I’m the sticky-note queen.
What’s next for Emmy Law for 2022?
This year is all about the songs and new relationships. This year I’m really going to focus on building a team that gets my vision for the music and is totally on board. I’m looking for bandmates and producers. I hope to put out a handful of singles this year, and also record an EP.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Roasted beets with coconut oil!
And your favorite cheat food?
It’s a toss-up between gluten-free fries and a freakin massive burger
How would you explain your fashion style?
Comfy and cute is the goal
Best advice ever given?
The artist Danielle, of Danielle Ate the Sandwich, once told me to be “fiercely authentic” when I asked her for advice. That’s always stuck with me, and I have it taped up to a wall in my apartment.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I see myself being even closer to the kinds of songs I’ve always wanted to release…I’ll still be streaming on Twitch and having a blast with my Twitch family the EmLaws, and perhaps have a good collaboration situation with other writers!
Favorite song? Why?
Anchor by Novo Amor – it makes me feeeeeel.
What do you think of Social Media?
It’s absolutely a love-hate relationship. I do it because it’s the best way in 2022 to connect with people and discuss my music. Thankful for the opportunity, but sometimes I wish it was 1992.
Where we can follow you?
I’m on all socials @emmylawmusic. I stream Sundays and Mondays on Twitch
Favorite Food: Burger and fries
