Hi Lulu, please tell us a little about you?
My name is Lulu Simon and I am a singer/songwriter, popstar wannabe, frog lover, etc.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Sensitive, kooky, twerp.
How did you get started in the business?
I’ve been writing songs since I was like 12 years old, so I think I always knew I was going to try to get into music professionally, and I released my first EP in August 2019.
How has this changed your life?
I feel like in many ways, being able to make music has given my life purpose. If I wasn’t making music full time I truly don’t know what I would be doing, I was a sociology major in college so I don’t know that I have any useful skills in the professional world.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I think at this point in time it’s actually really easy to create and release music, so that’s kind of what I did. I don’t even necessarily consider myself a part of the “industry” since I’m an independent artist.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Sparkly, hopeful, sensitive.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I think truthfully I’m influenced by all music I listen to, and all music I’ve ever listened to, because I always knew that I wanted to write and make music. I grew up loving Britney Spears, Queen, No Doubt, etc., now I love Carly Rae Jepsen, Kim Petras, the 1975, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, all of the usual pop suspects, really. I don’t even necessarily know if I chose to make music, or if music chose me, y’know? I’m a very sensitive person and I always felt that music is the best form of self expression. I think if I couldn’t music music as a means of emotional release, I would explode.
Do you play any instrument?
I do! I play the guitar and the piano, mainly.
Do you ever get nervous?
I get nervous literally all the time.
Tell us about your new single “Being Alone is the Best?”
I wrote “Being Alone is the Best” during and after a very intense friendship break up as a means of self-soothing.
What’s the story behind the song?
I was feeling really lonely at the time, I was in the middle of ending a bunch of very close friendship that no longer served me, and I was questioning whether it was better to be miserable with people who weren’t really my friends, or to face the unknown terror of being completely by myself. I wrote the song to ease my way into being alone, and to turn that fear into comfort.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
I think the most rewarding part of my work is being able to help other people express themselves through my music.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
Well this is a tough question because I don’t think I’m an entrepreneur and I also don’t really read that much OOPS. Maybe something like The Secret? Learn how to attract positivity and success into your life? I don’t know!
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
If I were to give advice to my younger self I think it would probably be something along the lines of listen to your gut. I think I ignored my gut instincts a lot because I wanted to be “nice” or “likable” and I just think those surface level worries aren’t worth it if you aren’t being true to yourself.
How would your best friend describe you?
I hope that my best friend would describe me as a loyal and fun.
What’s next for Lulu Simon in 2022?
Hopefully in 2022 I just get to keep releasing music, maybe play some shows!
What is your favorite healthy food?
My favorite healthy food is probably broccoli, because I love it, little trees.
And your favorite cheat food?
My favorite cheat food has gotta be like french fries or hotdogs. Although I don’t necessarily think I would consider those cheat foods, I am proud to eat a hotdog whenever I get the chance.
How would you explain your fashion style?
Mostly I think my fashion style is really based in comfort, I can’t wear uncomfortable clothes even if they’re super cute. So I like wearing baggy clothes, but I’m also very drawn to pinks and pastels, I like glitter, I like a Y2K inspired moment.
What is your own definition of happiness?
I think my own definition of happiness is being completely at peace with yourself and your life. I don’t think there’s such thing as “perfect”, so I think striving for perfection is only going to drive you insane, but finding peace with yourself and your life despite the imperfections, to me, that is happiness.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I could meet someone living or dead it would absolutely be Rupaul, supermodel of the world, I love him so much, he is everything.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
I think the dream holiday would be to like, rent a villa in Italy or something and go with all of my friends and just eat bolognese and pastries for a week.
Do you support any charity?
I support the Half Earth Project, which is an environmental conservation organization, and even though it’s not necessarily a charity, I do stand with Planned Parenthood.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
Hopefully 5 years from now I’m still able to make music that is representative of my life and my heart and hopefully I’ll be friends with Rupaul by then.
Favorite song? Why?
It’s sort of impossible to choose 1 favorite song, but I’m gonna go with Dela By Johnny Clegg, because I think it’s just a perfect, wonderful, joyful song and I love those gated 80s drums.
