Hi Lia, please tell us a little about you?
I’m a 19 year old singer songwriter from Tel Aviv, I’d say my genre is a mix of indie folk and rnb. I’ve been singing ever since I could talk and writing songs since I was 14, I always know I wanted to be a singer but I wasn’t writing music, what got me started was the idea of other people writing what I sing for me and I just couldn’t do it, so I started writing about my life and my issues and stress, and my songwriting quickly became my escape from all of it.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Opinionated, spontaneous and vocal.
How did you get started in the business?
I met my manager Sharona Nomder when I was 16, I am so lucky that she believes in me, without her all of this wouldn’t be possible.
How has this changed your life?
Not so much actually. I think I grew up quickly, “buckled down” so to speak, since I am in charge of my own life, there is no guarantee that if I do a specific something, then I’ll succeed in music, so I have to be completely invested and in charge of my destiny, but it hasn’t changed my life that much because I always knew that this was what I was meant and going to do, so I’ve been working towards this all my life.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Honest, vulnerable and raw
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Everyone I’ve ever crossed paths with has influenced me in one way or another, whether it’s a glance with a stranger on the bus or my mom, I’ve been trying to write songs out of “nothing” and I can find influence everywhere. I don’t remember choosing to make music, I always just knew this was going to be my life.
Do you play any instrument?
I play the guitar but I wouldn’t consider myself any good
Do you ever get nervous?
Not so much lately. I’ve been practicing being aware of my breathing and using that to calm myself throughout the day, though I’ve dealt with being stressed my entire life.
Tell us about your single “Sad Teenage Flower?”
It’s the first original song I ever recorded, it means so much to me because it was the first time I was in a studio for me and I was working with my producer which is something I’ve always dreamed of.
What’s the story behind the song?
It’s the story of my middle school / high school years. I grew up as a constant misfit and outsider, and I imagined all the other misfits as one, because everyone feels alone and like an outsider, I hoped this song would be a sort of universal “you’re not alone” song.
And about the success of your previous singles “Manboy”, “Bird” and “Metaphors for Being Alone?”
Shocking. I totally expected to put out songs and for no one to care, but the response has been amazing and totally overwhelming and I hope it never stops.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Figuring out my sound, which I didn’t quite figure out yet, but every time I get a little closer it is the most rewarding feeling.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
I have absolutely no idea. I read books for fun purposes
What would say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
To breath, first of all. That’s from my mom, who is one of the most amazing people in my life, after that every thing else comes as it should.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Not advice but I’d tell her how strong she is, and that things will and are better, let her know that she will find her people and her happiness and her places.
How would your best friend describe you?
Looks like a bitch is a marshmallow.
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
“Life outside the norms for a norm”
I am on a totally different path then all the people my age, and I’m creating my own life and structure, but I’m not an extraordinary person, I’m just doing what I know.
What’s next for Lia D’sau in 2022?
My debut ep is finally coming out!! It’s called Metaphors For Being Alone, and it’s out July 9th.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I’m vegan, and I grew up with my parents aware of how nature and the foods you eat can heal you and give you everything you need, so I’d say everything I eat is healthy? Maybe pesto and tahini in all shapes and forms.
And your favorite cheat food?
I don’t see foods as good or bad for you, if you feel life eating cake for example is what your body wants right now, it’s not a cheat food as long as you’re in tune with yourself.
How would you explain your fashion style?
It changes every couple months, I only shop second hand clothing, and most of my clothes are hand me downs from friends or family, so maybe what’s comfortable and also makes me look like I live in Greece.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness for me is peace of mind, even if it’s for 10 minutes at a time. I can’t tell you of time periods where I was sad or happy or depressed or excited, because I’m all of those emotions everyday. Happiness is everything and everywhere all the time.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Maybe my grandmother who passed away when I was 2. I am in a very musical family, but no one is a singer, and everyone says that she was an amazing singer. They had one tape of her singing but it was lost, so I would want to meet her and sing together.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
I’d want to do a van trip, maybe Australia. And I’ll take anyone who’d want to join, and my mom cause it’s her dream.
Best advice ever given?
When you drop something, instead of trying to catch it, look where it fell. Sounds simple but it saved many of my rings.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
Performing as much as I can and making music that inspires me. Maybe also being in love.
Favorite song? Why?
Mist of a dream by birdlegs and Pauline. There’s just something about that song I can’t tell you what it is, but it puts me in a trance.
What do you think of Social Media?
I don’t looooove it, but I can appreciate its part in connection people and making chasing your dreams more of an option.
