Tell us about your new single “All the Good Ones are Crazy.” What’s the story behind the song?
The song is about my personal family. You will even hear exact name references about people in my family. The song represents embracing who raised you and how they raised you.
How would you describe your sound in three words?
My sound in three words is definitely traditional meets modern. I honor my country roots while simultaneously experimenting with new sounds and ways of doing things.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
My biggest musical influences are definitely the Honky Tonk Angels. Dolly, Tammy and Loretta have shaped country music and my sound. I chose to make music because I could not see my life without it. The more I sang and wrote, the more I wanted to do it.
Do you play any instruments?
I play piano and guitar. Those instruments have definitely helped me discover my writing voice, and I am really grateful for that.
You’ve worked with several industry veterans. What would you say are the greatest lessons you have learned so far?
The greatest lesson I’ve learned is honestly to stand firm in your artistry. Knowing who you are and what you stand for will help people understand you and help you get the exact song you are looking for.
You emerged on the music scene at only 8-years-old. What advice would you give to your younger self?
I would want my younger self to be told to be strong. Strong in her faith, values and knowledge.
If you could collaborate with any musician living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Loretta Lynn. She broke through so many barriers and made new rules for country music that are still relevant today. She stood her ground and that is something I’ve always admired about her.
What’s next for Hillary Reese in 2022? Will there be a video for “All the Good Ones are Crazy?”
I’m still working on new music and I am very eager to share it. Yes, there will be a video for ‘All the Good Ones are Crazy!’ Be prepared to see a lot of true blue country things, but a lot of fun being had as well.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
In five years, I hope to still be as happy making music as I am now. I hope to be playing more and be in Nashville more of course, but as long as I am this happy making music, I will be okay.
