When it comes to blocking out sunlight, the two most common options are curtains and blinds. But which type of window treatment is superior? Some people believe blinds are better for the following reasons.
They block out more light
Blinds are usually better at blocking out the light because they can be installed with side channels which prevent light from entering a room from either side of the material. Curtains do not benefit from this, so light often spills out the sides. You can buy curtains with blackout fabric, but if there are gaps, the light will find a way through. Blackout blinds with side channels guaranteed 100% darkness.
Even without side channels, blinds are installed much closer to the windowpane, letting less light through. For instance, a roller blind lies flat against the glass, preventing much light from passing through. On the other hand, some curtains are inconsistent due to the need to bunch together neatly when they’re closed.
They suit a wider variety of windows
Buildings come in all shapes and sizes, with windows positioned high and low. In buildings with awkwardly placed windows, blinds are often a better fit. You couldn’t install a curtain as a shading method for a skylight because the fabric would hang down, but you could use an overhead blind. Blinds that are positioned in inaccessible spots can be controlled via remote control or crank.
They suit more types of properties
Blinds are commonly installed in homes and commercial settings alike. You wouldn’t bat an eyelid at a blind installed in pretty much any setting, from a friend’s bathroom to your local GP. On the other hand, if you entered a company’s large, modern office, curtains might look out of place. Curtains are much more suited to the residential market, whereas blinds are universal.
Summary
When picking a shading system, the decision is dictated by the type of window and personal preference. Curtains are an excellent window treatment, but they’re tailored more towards homeowners, while blinds are popular in all types of properties.
