Hi Gianna, please tell us a little about you?
Hey Naluda Mag! I’m a Brooklyn based vocalist, songwriter and artist.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
High-spirited, dynamic and heartfelt
We’re sure you have been asked this millions of times, but how did you get in the industry?
My parents are both classical musicians, so I grew up attending their concerts and listening to them practice and perform. I was immersed in music from a young age and began taking voice lessons from my Grandmother who was an opera singer as well.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Lush, warm + soulful
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I attended Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music and took a songwriting class on a whim. I had a really great teacher who encouraged me to keep learning guitar and writing. From there, I moved to NYC and started recording and gigging and I haven’t stopped since.
Do you play any instrument?
Yes, guitar. I dabble on keys as well.
Do you ever get nervous?
Of course! Releasing music is such a vulnerable act in itself, but I think that’s also part of the beauty.
Tell us about your new single “Lover For The Week?”
‘Lover For The Week’ is a song about not only accepting a fleeting romance, but embracing it for what it is. It’s got this chilled-out, retro inspired soundscape with saxophone, lush keys and expansive stacked harmonies. I recorded the song out in Los Angeles and then added the finishing touches here in NYC.
What’s the story behind the song?
The song is an ode to a romance I had where I connected with someone who lived in a different place. It was intense and beautiful, but also very fleeting. I think the track is a way of coming to terms with the whirlwind of that experience and the acceptance that not every relationship is meant to last and to take things for what they are.
Which project is still on your bucket list?
Definitely an EP, I’ve been building demos and a track list and am looking forward to getting started on recording. It’s in the pipeline, but I also have to remind myself that good things take time and music is no exception.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
The artistic process of songwriting is simultaneously one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done and also the hardest. One of my favorite parts is bringing my ideas to fruition and collaborating with other talented musicians, songwriters and producers. The hardest part, for me, is staying grounded, centered and inspired throughout it all.
What’s next for Gianna Alessi in 2022?
Next up, I’m playing a string of shows in the fall including a birthday show on 11/11/22 at Heaven Can Wait in NYC’s east village.
What is your favorite song? And why?
Wow, that’s a great but very difficult question! I’m going to have to go with ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ by Sam Cooke. It’s so emotive and raw and beautiful.
Any loves other than music?
I love to travel and go vintage shopping/thrifting. I also love to kick back with my cat, Lulu.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I think I would like to meet Aretha Franklin. She faced so much adversity in her life, but still was this incredibly strong, iconic woman and artist. To turn your pain into art and action like that is not only powerful, but brave.
Best advice ever given?
Release the idea that things could have been any other way.
How’s a typical day in your life?
I live in Brooklyn, so the hustle is definitely real. I wake up and get some work done on my computer – booking shows, pitching for playlists, doing marketing work etc. I try to reserve the afternoons for practicing, writing and working on new music.
Name one of your strengths?
My genuine love for people and ability to foster meaningful relationships.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
My idea of a perfect Sunday is a long walk in Prospect Park or a fall hike followed by a session in the studio.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Livin’ On A Prayer is my go to karaoke song, gotta love those modulations.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is staying true to myself creatively and producing music from the soul.
Do you support any charities?
My mom runs an amazing non-profit in our hometown called Soup Angels where she feeds anyone in need, no questions asked. I’m super proud of her work and am proud to support such an important mission.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I’m a big salad girl – I love a kale salad with cashew caesar dressing.
And your favorite cheat food?
If you couldn’t tell by my last name, I’m Italian so pizza and pasta are king to me.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
Being rude to the server or bartender for sure.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Creating music, performing, living authentically.
How would you describe your fashion style?
A little bit bohemian, a little bit city girl.
What do you think of Social Media?
I personally believe that social media is an amazing tool to connect, network and expand. I think the key is finding the right balance with how much time we spend on it.
