Describe yourself in 3 words?
Happy, adventurous, reader
How did you get started into acting?
When I was younger, people used to tell my parents to get me into commercials. Then one day, they shared a few pictures of me to their friend’s agent, and she invited me to her open house. By that weekend, I was signed onto her roster and within the first few months, did my first commercial.
How has this changed your life?
It’s changed my life by making me a more confident kid. Before I was more shy and didn’t really talk to people when I first met them and now, I’m much more comfortable.
What is the best and worst part of being an actress?
The best part about being an actress is being on set filming, working with so many different people and hanging out…it’s super fun. The worst part about being an actress is probably having to be more careful with your words and actions because there are always people who look for bad behavior.
How do you prepare for a role?
Normally what I do is read the sides and story lines, and then try to figure out how the character would feel. One of my coaches taught me “verb-ing”, where you write down the verb right beside the line, so you can get into the emotions really fast.
Tell us about your work in the new CW series “Superman & Lois?”
I’ve been on the show as a recurring character for the first two seasons and it’s been a really awesome experience.
And about your role as Sophie Cushing?
I like playing Sophie because I really like hanging out with my Cushing family because they are all so nice and fun. Being Sophie is great because I feel like I’m really a part of another family.
I’m the daughter of Lana Lang and Kyle Cushing, and the younger sister of Sarah.
What other projects have you been part of?
Most recently, I played Young Liv in the new Netflix series called “Keep Breathing”. I’ve also done a few commercials and have had small roles in The Good Doctor, Gabby Duran, Away, and Motherland Fort Salem.
What kind of roles do you like or would like to play and why?
I’d love to be in a Percy Jackson movie because I’m reading the books and I love the adventure in them. It would be really fun to make a film that has a lot of special effects, as I haven’t done anything like that yet.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
The most rewarding part of working on shows for me is playing different characters because it’s interesting to see how other peoples lives are and how mine could be. It’s also really fun to be on set because there’s so much going on and it’s really exciting.
What’s your advice for the newer actors?
For newer actors, knowing that acting isn’t as easy as you think it might be, because you have to put a lot of time and effort into it. Normally you have to do a lot of auditions before you get a job, so having patience is a good thing.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far in this business?
I’ve learned how to adapt to changing environments, like how to make friends on set, how to adjust lines in a scene from directors or other crew, or getting to play different characters.
How would your best friend describe you?
I think she would say that I’m fun, happy, nice, friendly and sporty.
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
If I was a book, I would be called “Joselyn Picard” because Harry Potter and Percy Jackson are named after the main characters. So I would want my book to be named after me.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
Harry Potter because he’s always working to get his goal which is to defeat Voldemort. He never quits and he works as a team with others to get things done.
What’s next for Joselyn Picard in 2022?
Getting back into school and back to my routine of singing class, Spanish lessons and soccer. I’m also currently on a project that I’m not allowed to talk about yet.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Mangos because they are amazing!
And your favorite cheat food?
I have so many…. but I think potatoes because I love them so much.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Ice cream, especially chocolate. Actually, no, books because it’s super fun to go into different worlds. No… chocolate ice cream AND books!
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Rick Riordan, as he’s the author of Percy Jackson. I would be able to learn about the Greek Gods and how he got into writing books about mythology.
Best advice ever given?
I think “Don’t ask, don’t get” is a good one because it’s kind of true. So I almost always ask and if they say no, then at least I asked. But if they say yes, then yay!
Do you support any charity?
Well I have done a few things for the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver by volunteering and collecting donations. With a bunch of people and my parents, we’ve made sandwiches and handed them out. Also one Christmas, we handed out gloves, scarves, toques and socks directly to people on the streets and I got to hand out the candy canes. It felt really good to do that even though it was little scary at the beginning. Meeting so many people who were really grateful was something I’ll never forget. Another time, I had a lemonade stand and donated all the money to Big Brothers and Sisters.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I’d like to see myself continuing as an actress doing interesting and fun projects.
Favorite song? Why?
I love so much music so this question is hard and my answer is probably going to change by the time this is published. But right now, I think it’s Lauren Spencer’s “Flowers”.
What do you think of Social Media?
I think it’s a bit of both good and bad because I learn a lot of really cool things, like how to do art stuff and techniques, how to cook, cute animal videos… but the bad part of social media is that it makes a lot of people insecure about how they look, and what they do or say. I’m not allowed to have my own accounts on social media, only accounts run by my parents because I’m so young.
