Check out our interview with talented singer-songwriter Izzy Mahoubi who just released her brand new single “Hang Around.”
Raised In Phoenix, Izzy began performing at the age of 12 around Arizona and in Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up listening to Tom Petty, Taylor Swift, and The Beatles bore Izzy’s love for songwriting and storytelling at a young age. With each song, Izzy pours out her honest love for music through her perspective on the world with the hope that anyone who listens would feel inspired to share their own stories.
On the new single Izzy shares, “The overall vibe and story behind Hang Around is an indie pop/singer songwriter single about reminiscing old memories while looking towards the future. It’s upbeat, yet personable sound has descriptive lyrics and friendly melodies accompanied by an acoustic guitar reflecting a similar sound to Solar Power by Lorde. More than just “dreaming of the summer,” Hang Around is a song that dares to reimagine what your life could be like and what you are able to achieve. My hopes are that this song can make whoever is listening feel uplifted and excited about their lives and that the chorus will be stuck in their heads after listening to it one time lol.”

Hi Izzy, please tell us a little about you?
Hey I’m Izzy Mahoubi and I’m a singer songwriter and artist from Phoenix.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
In three words I’d describe myself as ambitious, curious, and dependable oh, and indecisive.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I started writing songs and playing guitar when I was eleven and shortly after, I took a trip to Nashville and fell in love with songwriting. I’ve been performing in Arizona and Nashville and writing songs ever since.
How has this changed your life?
I don’t remember a time when my life wasn’t revolved around music. The greatest part about being in the industry is creating music and sharing it with people and connecting with them.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Three words are difficult, maybe honest, popish, and feel-good.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Taylor Swift, The Beatles, Maggie Rogers, Lorde, Amy Winehouse, John Mayer, Fleetwood Mac, the list goes on. The honesty and storytelling from these writers and bands bore my love for music and inspired me to write my own stories.
Do you play any instruments?
Guitar, drums, and piano!
Do you ever get nervous?
Yes! Performance anxiety and nerves can sometimes be the best or the worst. I have learned to set my intentions for any show I have and just have a good time!
Tell us about your single “Hang Around?”
Hang Around is a song I wrote during quarantine when I was a junior in high school. This is a song about looking towards the future and starting over whether that means moving somewhere new, changing your career, or going to the beach. A feel good song for every season of life.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
The greatest thing I’ve learned is that throughout life people are going to try to limit your capabilities and tell you what your worth is, especially in the music industry. Being your #1 fan and staying true to who you are and what you’re doing is the most rewarding thing you can do.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
I’d say to my younger self, social media is not real life, just write a song and keep moving forward.
What’s next for Izzy Mahoubi in the last months of 2022 and for 2023?
New music that I have been working on for a while and some really exciting shows.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Brussel sprouts. For real the best vegetable.
And your favorite cheat food?
Trader Joe’s gluten free mac and cheese hits different.
How would you explain your fashion style?
Fashion changes day to day for me. I like choosing things that are a little out there for me when I’m performing but still comfortable. Currently I’ve been really into platform shoes like clogs, gogo boots, and cowboy boots, everything in that category is a winner.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is resting in the purpose that you have in life and I think that creates happiness.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to get lunch with Paul McCartney and talk about everything. I don’t think there could ever be a more interesting conversation.
Best advice ever given?
Once I was in Nashville and I heard Abby Anderson talk about her journey in the music industry. She said how there’s always going to be people who aren’t a fan of what you’re doing and then people who absolutely love you. It’s about creating a team who supports you and not being discouraged about the doors that might shut on you or the people who might skip your songs.
Do you support any charity?
The Muscular Dystrophy Association
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
In five years I see myself with an established catalogue of music released and hopefully on some sort of tour!
Favorite song? Why?
Favorite song right now is probably Stick Season by Noah Kahan. It stirs so much emotion every time I listen to it. Favorite song of all time would probably have to be Vienna by Billy Joel or maybe Out Of The Woods by T Swift.
