Check out our interview with Sydney’s talented Pop Princess Coco Bevan who shares her heartbreak experience through the pop anthem “Bruised Ego.” Bevan gives listeners catchy lyrics designed to have you screaming along with her by the end. Coco Bevan combines electro-pop sounds with theatrical and cinematic qualities to make a one-of-a-kind spectacle.
“Bruised Ego” is a post-heartbreak anthem with catchy lyrics made to scream along to, releasing anger through the relatable experiences of dating a self-entitled person. The song is inspired by Coco’s own intense relationships, paired with her friends’ experiences with heartbreak, disappointment, and revenge. In “Bruised Ego”, Coco brings together quintessentially electro-pop sounds with the drama and theatrics of vendetta, violins, and voicemails – a trifecta that reflects her extravagant personality.

Hi Coco, please tell us a little about you?
Big question! I am a singer from Sydney, Australia. I have always been an out-of-the-box character and my outlet is music, fashion and vlogging.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Authentic, dedicated, exuberant
We’re sure you have been asked this a million times but how did you get in the industry?
I grew up doing musical theatre and went on to study it at the Australian Institute of Music, followed by Brent Street in Sydney. I went to LA right when Covid started and got locked down with some amazing creatives that sparked this new joy of creating my own music. I fell in love with this process, came home, and spent the next two years writing and recording in the pop/house genre. I released my debut single “Rebel Soul” this year, followed by “Bruised Ego” and it has been unbelievable watching it take off.
How has this changed your life?
I get to do what I love every single day and have a small impact on people in the world – genuinely a dream come true.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Theatrical, groovy, fun
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I was influenced by early 2000s pop stars like Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Miley Cyrus, Pussycat Dolls, P!nk, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga. I can vividly remember playing their CDs (yes, CDs!) on repeat as a child. I was destined to perform in some way and one of my biggest strengths is my work ethic so once music was in my eyesight from a young age, there was no turning back.
Do you ever get nervous?
Absolutely! But I see nerves as a good thing. I love the feeling of adrenaline pumping. Being aware of why the nerves are there instantly calms them.
Tell us about your new single “Bruised Ego?”
My latest single “Bruised Ego” is a pop rock revenge banger about your classic ‘Fuckboy’. I wanted to write the most unapologetic, straightforward anthem to scream in your bedroom, about wasting your time with a selfish, entitled person that realistically only hits you up when it’s convenient for them. Created with one of my favorite producers, Liam Quinn, we mixed my love of electronic production with beautiful live violins and guitars. It’s an emotional rollercoaster from both the lyrics and instrumentation and I am so excited to finally share it!
What’s the story behind the song?
I have witnessed so many of my friends get screwed around by toxic partners – from being ghosted, to cheated on, put down, and strung along. After a long relationship from my teens to 20s, it recently was my first time in the dating scene and I finally learned how this game is played…. You only get the texts when it’s convenient for them, they are talking to other girls, it’s messy out there and it hurts!!!! Instead of writing a heartbreak song, I want to create a fuck you anthem.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Creating a piece of work that is so unique to my own experience and sharing it with the world to interpret into their own lives, it’s so cool when you really think about it. Music is so powerful. Watching on the back end of Spotify Artists, people from countries all over the world listen in live time still shocks me every day. Getting messages on my socials from people sharing how they relate to a song is one of the best feelings ever.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
The Success Experiment – Lillian Ahenkan (FlexMami)
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
You create your own reality. You literally co-create your life with the energy of your thoughts, beliefs, perspectives, and actions – it is so powerful. Also, kindness is the best quality a person can have, so treat others how you’d like to be treated.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
“Believe in yourself.” Growing up is so overwhelming, and I can remember having so much fear and constant comparison. I’d tell my younger self it is SO cool to be uniquely YOU. Stand proud, stand out, because it’s all going to pay off. (Spoiler alert: it did!)
How would your best friend describe you?
Well, I asked them! Shout out to Max and Nicole. They said I am a perfectionist, driven and silly. Unapologetically myself. I’ll take that!
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
“One Vision & One Million Thoughts” – I am quite manic and my mind never stops ticking, but at the same time I have tunnel vision and a sole objective.
What’s next for Coco Bevan in 2023?
Next year is the biggest year for me career-wise, it is all about getting this music we’ve been banking up out there! Starting off the year with my first house track, followed by some more pop bangers. Collaborating with songwriters and producers from all over the world is just SO exciting AHHH! I have some of my first shows as a DJ as well, which will be WILD. I actively share all of this and more on my social media so definitely follow along on TikTok and Instagram.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I am the queen of trying weird healthy recipes that pop up online. Right now I am obsessed with cottage cheese chocolate mousse… I am not joking, try it! I hate cooking, it is 3 ingredients blended together – cottage cheese, cacao powder, and maple syrup. Well-blended it tastes exactly like a chocolate cheesecake. Don’t knock it until you try it.
And your favorite cheat food?
Chocolate and ice cream, I have such a sweet tooth.
How would you explain your fashion style?
I live and breathe fashion. I love finding unique, different styles and pieces, and matching them together to create new, original looks. Layering is everything. I am always drawn to something sparkly, colourful, or well-tailored. Cowboy boots are a must-wear with any outfit for me at the moment. I post my daily outfits on Tik Tok.
What is your own definition of happiness?
I am slowly still figuring this out myself. It is the things we take for granted, the small things, the genuine time with people you love.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I’d love to meet my future self. She’s going to be able to give me the best advice. Having her tell me to trust the process and that everything is going to be alright would be the best reassurance.
What would be your dream holiday, and who would you go with?
My dream holiday would be in 5 years time. I don’t really mind where, but with my two best friends. We all have aspirations to move to complete opposite sides of the world very soon and the saddest part about chasing that dream is leaving them behind. So my ideal holiday is picking a place in the world for us to all be together again.
Best advice ever given?
“Be present.” Recently at dinner somebody pointed out “don’t look up but, what colour is the ceiling? What do the chandeliers look like? What does it smell like here?” he showed me how I wasn’t living in the moment, I am always thinking ahead. That small conversation changed me completely. Being present is key.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I see myself living in America – LA holds a big place in my heart. I want to constantly be putting out music that is honest to myself and unique in sound. I will continue to vlog and share my personality online so I have a passionate fan base that feels like a part of my world. I will be playing at festivals across the world. I see a summer season in Europe lined up. Collaborating with producers and DJs to make fun, timeless anthems. Definitely a fashion collaboration, styling alongside a brand I respect, to help people push the boundaries. I will always be so close to my friends and family, whilst continuing to make new connections. In 5 years I will be very proud.
Favorite song? Why?
I have loved this interview but that question is unanswerable! My top Artists are Becky Hill, Tate Mcrae, Peach PRC, Dua Lipa, and Fletcher.
What do you think of Social Media?
I love social media as an artist and I dislike it as an individual. I use it as an amazing platform to share my music and life, reaching new audiences every day. I learn new ‘hacks’ daily for surviving in my 20s! However, the time my peers and I spend on it is appalling, it breaks my heart the routine we are all in of constantly checking it, and taking photos/videos of every moment. No one is present anymore. We also have such short attention spans because of social media, as an artist, you will be lucky if someone lasts 15 seconds on the song you’ve put so much time into. People don’t appreciate art, they all want quick fixes of humour or education – I get millions of views when I am being silly and on the same day will share music and will be lucky to get a thousand. It is very deflating. We can’t mention the negatives without pointing out the screwed beauty standard that is painted and the constant comparison of our lives when you have to remember it is such a small, edited glimpse you are seeing. There are such polar opposite benefits and disadvantages, and we need to put more time into figuring out a healthy solution as social media quickly is taking hold of our lives.
