Check out our interview with London based newcomer Jack Kane who just released his new single, We’d Be Good. Having gained support from areas such as CLASH, Wonderland, House Of Solo and Atwood Magazine on the back of gorgeous debut EP Under Your Spell, We’d Be Good sees the fast emerging artist showcasing an earthy side to his vocal, creating an indie pop cut about a relationship that never quite gets over the final hurdle.

Hi Jack, please tell us a little about you?
Hi! I’m a musician based in Hertfordshire but I tell people I’m from north London because it sounds cooler.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Not good with numbers.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I grew up around performers and have never really considered doing anything different. I did acting from an early age and started singing when I was around 9. My ‘music industry’ career is very much in its infancy! I got scouted by my manager from a Fleetwood Mac cover I put on social media not that long ago.
How has this changed your life?
My day to day life is completely different to how it was a couple of years ago. I’d usually sit around waiting for an audition to come in, but musically, since being ‘found’, I’ve been able to work with such incredible people and have a real purpose that I can work towards each day.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Vintage influenced but with modern textures and sounds.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
My dad influenced my music taste very early on. He gave me his old iPods when I was little. I didn’t really understand the concept of music being old or new so my playlists were pretty eclectic, but it gave me a nice all round appreciation for music! I’ve always enjoyed creating art in various forms, painting, acting… but I find music is the most accessible and effective way of quickly getting rich emotion across.
Do you play any instrument?
I played piano from a young age. Very loosely play the drums. I play guitar and bass but I’m still honing my skills, and I had saxophone lessons while i was at school because I thought it was going to go down a treat with the ladies (it didn’t).
Do you ever get nervous?
I’m definitely getting better. I used to suffer so badly with nerves and it would present itself in many ways. The past year has kind of been a turning point and I now understand what “good nerves” means. It’s lucky I’m not very good at anything else, otherwise I might have pursued less stressful career options!
Tell us about your new single “We’d Be Good?”
‘We’d Be Good’ takes a look into a mismatched relationship. It’s about knowing all of the faults but none of the fixes. It boils down a lot of serious problems into short, seemingly manageable sentences; “if I could give you what you want, we’d be good”. It’s about knowing all of these issues and still not being able to leave each other.
What’s the story behind the song?
I remember thinking it would be funny to start a song with “there’s something wrong with you”. After that the next few lines flowed; “you get under my skin, but i’ll go back to you again” and i think that sums up the theme of the whole song. Then it was puzzle work to give more context. I think it’s quite relatable, and something lots of us go through when making a mess of early relationships.
And about the success of your first EP “Under Your Spell?”
The reaction to the EP was incredible, it recently hit over a million streams which was pretty nuts! I think a lot of people get older and are a bit embarrassed about their early work, but I think I’ll still love this one when I’m old and gray.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
When you really hit the nail on the head and come out of a writing session with a banger you absolutely love, listening to it on the journey home is such a good feeling. I also love seeing people singing along when I play live, always interesting to see which part of the song people know the best.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
Not to get too excited until things are finished! If you hear exciting murmurs about big opportunities, don’t start throwing parties. It makes it that much worse when it doesn’t happen. Have a plan and take small steps every day. If you blow up overnight and become the next big sensation, great! But if not, then at least you’re a bit closer to the goal!
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
“Productive Procrastination”. At school I learned songs on guitar or wrote lyrics when I should’ve been doing homework, and I would get this horrible gut feeling you get when procrastinating. Now that music is my full-time thing, I’m so glad I was doing that! I think when you’re avoiding a task, you may as well do something else productive.
What’s next for Jack Kane in 2023?
Lots of live gigs. So far, my live shows have been just me and a guitar. I’m looking to introduce more elements, whether that’s working with some track or bringing other musicians on with me. I want to fill it out a little more, and am very excited to do so. Other than that, obviously more writing and recording.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I’d love to meet Fleetwood Mac, I’m such a big fan and it would be great to talk to them about their different processes with music making.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
Always wanted to go somewhere cold. So maybe Finland or somewhere cool. I’d probably go with John Mayer.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I’d love to be playing some of the venues I grew up watching gigs in. Ally Pally, 02 Academy, Wembley..! I’d love to perform live or just sing with any of my favorite artists at the moment – Miley, hit me up!
Favorite song? Why?
Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere. The song is literally magic.
What do you think of Social Media?
Like most people my age, there’s a love hate vibe going on. I’m definitely addicted to it. It’s tricky because I’m very good at convincing myself I’m doing research and keeping up with trends for my own personal content! I owe a lot to social media though, I definitely couldn’t be doing what I am now without it.
