Check out our interview with London based avant-garde pop artist Steinsdotter who just released her spring single, “Dancing In The Shower.”
As a constantly shapeshifting creative, Steinsdotter is known for her genre-fluid sound and finds herself creating music based on what she feels genuinely inspired to create above anything else. Following recent releases “Nightshift” and “Air,” “Dancing In The Shower” serves as an irrefutable testament to the shapeshifting artist’s versatility as she continues peeling back the layers of her creativity. Describe yourself in 3 words?
Curious, always wondering
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
For me I made up my mind when I was 9 years old that I was an artist and I wanted to live that life fully. Blood tears and joy. I had no idea what that meant or how it would look of course but something inside of me knew how I wanted to feel. And everything has been a trial and error ever since really, i moved out of home and got my own place when I was 15 years old. I commit to the adventure with no guarantee , to this day that is the magic. Feels a little like skydiving. so I guess this industry was always gonna be an interesting place for me to explore. Describe your sound in 3 words?
Shapeshifting, playful , cheeky
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I feel like there are so many influences and inspirations from different corners of the world, but Patti Smith is defiantly the queen of punk poetry and life! And when I discovered Leonard Cohens books in my early teens that was another big moment. I fell in love with a lot of David Lynchs work too on the screen, The way he creates such absurd and intriguing worlds. I have been creating, writing and making for as long as I can remember. I guess my inner child never wanted to grow up and out of creativity. What I love about making music is trying to capture that pure essence of a moment, feel it fully, express it fully. Atm I’m super inspired by Serpentwithfeet and his amazing flow, and I’ve been streaming Desire Marea non stop.
Do you play any instrument?
Yes I love getting lost learning my way around an instrument. Forever a student. I play flute, drums, bass and a little guitar and piano.
I’m really keen on learning the duduk too atm but I still sound like a sad elephant when I try so I’ll keep you posted on that one haha
Do you ever get nervous?
Yes, I get mega nervous. I’m naturally a shy person that doesn’t mind being the low key observer in the corner of a room. But music has gifted me the opportunity to constantly challenge my fear by pushing past my comfort zone. It’s one of those love hate relationships really, living on the inner edge constantly a little bit afraid, Every time I get on stage I feel like i’m about to faint, it feels like I leave my body and like I’m going to float away in to the abyss, but I hold on tight to the microphone, allow it to be the centre of me, and as soon as my band start playing my body reacts to the music and somehow I start singing. I think if I’m going to be in this world and of this world anyway I might as well allow the melody to speak for me right? Even when it shakes.
Tell us about your new single “Dancing In The Shower”?
Dancing in the shower was an idea we had under lockdown because I was thinking of a way to spread music joy in a world where everyone was trapped in their house, and I started imagining how everyone can still break the seriousness and dance in their own shower, hopefully with a good outfit on! Despite everything that is going on. You’d be surprised how fun it actually is! I already have so many little video clips of people dancing in their showers that was sent to me. But Please do find me online if you feel like sending me a clip of you having your best “ dancing in the shower “ moment! I would love to experience it with you! Me and mega talented Red jesus had so much fun developing this idea together! The song really started to take shape when I went to Madrid to finally meet him in person and spend a few days in the studio together after 5 years friendship online. We wanted it to feel uplifting and playful and have the power to travel the oceans.
What’s the story behind the song?
I’ve admired Red Jesus as an artist online for years and always felt like he has such a fresh sound , so we developed a friendship over our love for music and playing drums really. We wanted to make something that put a smile on people’s faces and remind them to feel joy share joy be joy
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
The most rewarding part of my work is that I constantly get to learn new things and develop new connections with other people in search for their harmony.
What’s next for Steinsdotter in 2023?
I’m actually pinching my arm at the moment as I’m weeks away from releasing my first ever Mixtape to the world “Ginungagap.” Which is a collection of my recent music dwellings and works. It’s all kinds of musical flavours to feast on. It will also be released on limited Vinyl too , I think that is what makes me so excited. To get to create something physical and share in a world so busy with digital feels surreal. I’m also in rehearsals for my up and coming live gigs. Very much looking forward to getting back on stage because I have so much new material I’m dying to share. Also I wanna dance so come find me so we can dance together this year
What is your favorite healthy food?
I love dry things. Like almonds and walnuts. Raw carrots is a big one. But all kinds of fruits too. My new obsession is eating ripe mangos in the bathtub. Like real juicy mangos and I always have a bowl of grapes on my bed side table.
And your favorite cheat food?
hmmm if you can call Halloumi falafel wraps cheat food I am all over that with a big dose of garlic & chilli sauce please!
How would you explain your fashion style?
My fashion style is I would much rather not wear clothing and just remain in my birthday suit all day, but seeing how that’s not always an option I seek out soft and shiny fabrics to linger around in most days. And maybe a pair of sunglasses resting on the tip of my nose
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
That’s easy, I would defiantly meet Thoth Identified by the Greeks with Hermes the thrice born, messenger of the gods. I guess he must be both living and dead. Thoth was worshipped throughout Egypt as a moon god and the patron of science, literature, wisdom, and invention. I would ask him to show me the secret language of all things. Maybe ask him if we could have a jam on an ancient Egyptian chant together. I bet he could play instruments we can’t even imagine.
Do you support any charity?
I do. I’m very impressed with the work of “single homeless project” at the moment. We are planning some fun things together for the future. They are an amazing charity helping homeless people in London. There is more homeless people now than ever because of the cost of living crisis.
