Hi Alexa! Tell us a little about yourself.
Hiiii! I’m a pop artist born and raised in Southern California. I believe music is so healing and allows people to feel seen even when everything else might tell them otherwise. I love expressing myself through music and sharing it with others.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Intentional, honest and fun.
We’re sure you have been asked this a million times, but how did you get your start in the music industry?
I started singing when I was seven at my church and grew to love performing through musical theater and cafe gigs. I ended up going to arts school, then I was on a singing competition show, and now I’m pursuing music full-time! I am so proud of the music I am creating.
How has music changed your life?
I’ve been surrounded by music my whole life. What really changed me was when people started resonating with my songs and lyrics. I write about experiences and feelings I’ve had so it feels really special when other people can also relate.
How would you describe your sound in 3 words?
I like to call it “pop edge,” so three words I’d use would be intentional and bright, with edge.
Who influences you and why did you decide to first start making music?
I have always loved pop anthems so Kelly Clarkson, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry hold a special place in my heart from a young age. I started writing songs consistently in high school, but once I got off that singing show, I realized I wanted to be an artist and actually start releasing music.
Do you play any instruments?
I play acoustic guitar and a little bit of piano!
Tell us about your new single “Someone Better.” What’s the story behind the song?
For me, the song is about letting someone go, even when there were no red flags in their character or their capacity to love. They are a great person, but they just don’t align with the life ahead of you. Sometimes it’s easier to be mad at someone than to choose yourself even when the relationship seems fine.
What is the most rewarding part of being a musician?
Meeting new people! I love working with my collaborators, building friendships with my band, and getting to see how my songs have impacted fans.
What would you say are the greatest lessons you’ve learned in your career so far?
The biggest lesson (and challenge) I’ve had is speaking up. I have a really strong intuition about the direction and vision for my career, but sometimes I doubt it. Learning to trust myself has been very hard, but also very rewarding.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
I’d tell my younger self that her voice and what she cares about matters, even if nobody else thinks it does. I’d also tell her to keep praying. <3
What’s next for Alexa Cappelli in 2023?
Lotsssss of new music. I am stoked for this single and the project to follow it very soon!
What is your definition of happiness?
My joy and reactions are things I have more control over than I thought. I believe in Jesus and honestly, when I feel like I am not good enough or capable of hard things, I remember how loved I am and all the rest seems to fall away in comparison.
If you could meet someone – living or dead – who would it be and why?
I’d love to meet Shania Twain! I grew up listening to my mom’s favorite songs by her. I watched her documentary recently and felt so encouraged by her individualism and vision as an artist and a woman in this industry.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Trust your gut!
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I’d love to be touring! I plan to tour as soon as possible since I love performing and will be making music and performing forever. Especially by then I’ll be touring for another album I’m proud of that has made its way across the world and playing bigger shows to connect with more of my fans, I see a lot of that in my future.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car and/or at karaoke?
“I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston is always a hit at karaoke. I also think my song “Temporary” is great to belt out in the car too!
