Check out our interview with LA-based singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, Hunter Blair Ambrose, who just released her single “Runaway” on 5/26. Co-written by Hunter, the title “Runaway” refers to running away from one’s past, but also running away from the vulnerability that new experiences and love forces us into.

Hi Hunter, please tell us a little about you?
I’m a singer-songwriter and musician currently based in LA with origins in NYC. I’ve been recording and writing pop music since I was a teenager and have been fortunate to have been able to make it my entire life ever since. I try to combine provocative imagery with a powerful presence and soulful pop musicianship.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Emotive, commanding and fierce.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Throughout my life I have amassed a huge variety of musical influences. But, I would say Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, Michael Jackson, Tove Lo, Ariana Grande and Charli XCX are among the musicians that currently have the most impact on me and my artistry.
I chose to make music because I felt as though I had no other outlet to express my creativity, my feelings and my identity like it. I realized I had a natural musicianship at very young, but more than that, it was a core part of who I was and always has been. I cannot go one day without consuming the music that moves me or making music myself. It motivates me to be my most authentic version of myself and inspires me to represent my artistic self in a very deep way.
Do you play any instruments?
I do. I have been playing piano and keyboard since I was 6 years old.
Tell us about your new single “Runaway?”
RUNAWAY is my first single release since my album Scorpio Season was released in 2021. It represents a sonic shift for me as an artist and was inspired by my love of synthpop and features the same autobiographical style of songwriting that I have implemented since the beginning of my career. The song was written by myself and my frequent collaborator and producer, Jason Strong. It features energetic pop sonics but is met with a somewhat melancholic and reflective story told through its lyrics.
What’s the story behind the song?
RUNAWAY was written to represent a shift in my life artistically, emotionally and physically. Last year, I relocated from NYC to Los Angeles and that obviously had a big impact on me in every way. My move across the country was motivated by me wanting to give myself a fresh start in life and to chase my dreams without fear holding me back. The song was inspired by me wanting to embrace change in my life, allow myself to become vulnerable, and start over so to speak without repeating mistakes of the past and without giving into self doubt.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Hands down the most rewarding parts of my work have been the opportunity to see people all around the world connect to my music in their own individual ways. I know what a personal savior and an escape that music has been for me. The feeling that I get from the fact that I give people that same feeling with my work cannot be expressed. I also love that I have the chance to collaborate with other creatives and musicians from all over the world who have all played a part in elevating my craft.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Take it one day at a time and do not let fear dictate your decision making. You have one life to live, so go live it.
What’s next for Hunter Blair Ambrose in 2023?
I will be releasing a music video to promote RUNAWAY this summer. I also have a few subsequent single releases planned throughout the remainder of the year. I will also be performing across the US throughout 2023 to promote my new releases.
What is your own definition of happiness?
I would say that having the ability to be content and fulfilled by living a life driven by kindness, honesty and your passions creates a pretty fool-proof canvas for happiness.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would love to have met Michael Jackson and Prince. They are both legends in the pop music industry and I would give anything to be able to ask them for advice on what it means to have an everlasting and meaningful impact on music and the world.
Best advice ever given?
There is nothing to fear but fear itself.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
Ideally, I will be able to release, promote, and perform my music all over the world. I would love to perform at Coachella or at any of the major music festivals internationally and gain worldwide recognition for my contributions to pop music.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
I never miss an opportunity to show off my Britney Spears impression at karaoke so Oops I Did It Again or (Hit Me Baby) One More Time are usually my go-tos.
Where can we follow you?
You can stream my music and follow me on all major streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer, etc.) and social media.
