Hi Ilona, please tell us a little about you?
Hi! I’m Ilona, and I’m a singer/songwriter from Apple Valley, Minnesota. I moved to LA in the beginning of 2022, and have three back to back singles coming out this summer. I’m super excited about talking to you, and to finally release new music!
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Soulful, sensual, and electric.
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
My Mom was my first and greatest influence, because she is a singer too, and her voice and stage presence always inspired me. I grew up watching her perform and loving that world of artistry. I started performing from a young age, and there was no greater feeling in the world than being up on that stage. I also dance, so when I learned my first set of choreography, I knew music was something I needed to pursue.
Do you play any instrument?
I play enough piano to write music, and I took piano lessons up until high school. But I would not call myself an expert. 🙂
Tell us about your new single “Catch My Vibe?”
“Catch My Vibe” is one of my favorites! It was one of the first songs I wrote when I moved to LA. It is all about new beginnings and finding romance. It’s sexy and fun and has a great vibe. It feels reminiscent of spring/summer, and I hope it makes you feel like dancing!
What’s the story behind the song?
When I first arrived in LA, I would spend a lot of time exploring the city and coming back to my Airbnb to write. And during those first few months in LA, I wrote more hooks than I ever have in my life. I was in such a romantic headspace, and this song is about being caught off guard by how much you feel for someone. But also the allure of a brand new city, having fun, and being open for romance. Post-pandemic we’re all craving more human connection, and this song is about that!
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
When you have the ability to connect to your audience. There is no greater feeling than when people connect to your music and want to stream it! It is so satisfying to see your friends, or anyone that has come across your music singing along. It definitely feels like a dream come true.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
You are exactly where you need to be! We put so much pressure on ourselves to be at a certain point at a certain age, but I’ve never felt more aligned with my music than I do now in my life. Also, keep going, learning and growing, you never know how your music will evolve with time.
How would your best friend describe you?
My best friend would probably tell you I’m fiercely loyal, and nurturing. I have a strong work ethic, and I love uplifting others. My friends and family are my world, and nurturing those relationships is so important for me.
What’s next for Ilona in 2023?
I have three back to back singles this summer, and I’m planning to start performing really soon! I’ve been looking forward to being back on stage, so I am very excited! I am also constantly writing so definitely more music to come.
How would you explain your fashion style?
My fashion style is ultra feminine! I love anything that accentuates the curves, body con dresses, over the knee boots, the classic cat eye. I love classic staples too, like the little black dress. My favorite color recently has been red, it’s such a romantic color, and now it feels like a huge fashion staple for me.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness would be being surrounded by my friends, and doing what I love (singing, dancing). Self-care also makes me happy.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
There are so many people, but I have always been a huge fan of Billie Eilish and Finneas! To cross paths with them would be such an amazing experience for me. They are such great writers, and their music and sound has always resonated with me.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
My dream holiday would be anywhere in Europe. Someplace cozy, with an incredible view, and even better food. I’ve never been to that part of the world so visiting Paris, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece would be a dream. I would go with my musical team, and we could perform/tour every country!
Best advice ever given?
The best advice I’ve ever been given is to stay humble, and down to earth no matter where your career takes you. The score is always zero-zero. That really speaks to me, because whether your songs are doing well and you’re succeeding or sometimes your songs don’t do as well, you’re not motivated by the end goal. You are just doing what you love and continuing to work hard to put your best work forward, and learning as you grow.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
I see myself continuing to write and release music! Touring is definitely something I strive for and reaching as many ears as possible through my music.
What is you favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
“Escapism” by Raye is something I was belting in my car a few minutes ago! If it’s Karaoke, then definitely “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” by Whitney Houston.
