Check out our interview with Pop Innovator Artist BONZIE who just released her new single “Citrus.”
BONZIE wrote “Citrus” using a piano loop she played and created and then her friend Hayden Easterling aka Lucent created a homemade synth world for it to live in. BONZIE mixed and mastered the song to feel like an immersive deep dive into one’s memory – making it feel like a 3D world.
“Citrus” marks the follow-up to BONZIE’s recent single “Spiritual Violence” featuring Teo The Artist, released in early December, and the first in a long line of new music coming from the independent star this year.

Who influenced you, and why did you choose to make music?
I just got back from Japan and can’t stop listening to Ryuichi Sakamoto and a singer/songwriter my friend, Miyo, recommended me, Saho Terao. I saw Jim O’Rourke’s show in Shibuya and am also playing his music a lot as well.
Tell us about your new single, “Citrus?”
“Citrus” is a song I wrote with a piano part I recorded and looped. I sang on top of that kind of stream-of-consciousness-style. There’s a kind of natural inertia and peak to the song at the end. The art is a still from a camcorder of the house I was born in.
What’s the story behind the song?
I want to make music that describes things we can’t intellectualize without music. I tried to infuse as much of that feeling into the song. The song would be ruined for the listener by explaining the story, so you’ll have to listen to it to get the story.
And about the success of your previous single “Spiritual Violence?”
So glad if anyone can pull something from it! It was a really rewarding process producing it and shooting the music video.
What’s next for BONZIE in 2024?
Working on a full self-produced record, my long-term project that I’m putting my focus and care into. Also, in the more immediate future, I’m playing a show with my full band at Lodge Room in LA on Feb 1.
