Hi Bryce, please tell us about you? How did you begin your career? What is your musical background?
Born in New York, grew up mostly in socal. Started learning guitar in my garage when I was 13 years old. Started a punk rock band in high school called Goodwill and wrote songs. Went to Warped Tour every summer with my best friends. Auditioned for Berklee college of music with a song Id written with my high school band. Got a partial scholarship. Sang jazz in college but starting a pop rap group with a producer friend Nick (Lost Kings), a guitar player Nolan (Sir Nolan), and dj Dave (Skizz Marquee).
Do you have a musical family or did you just fall into songwriting all on your own?
My mom was an actress for 10 years on a soap opera called Passions and my dad is a restauranteur and neither of them play a musical instrument. Having said that, both parents were musical in their own way. My dad introduced me to jazz music and early 90s hip hop and rnb like Tupac, Biggie, Toni Tony Tone’, and Blackstreet. My mom was always singing songs to me from musicals and rock bands that we used to love – she has always had a very soothing voice.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Too many to count. When I’m writing I go through my internal roledex of artists I love and choose like 3 I feel like emulating that day in my writing. Lately I’ve been in a Chance the Rapper, Gorillaz, and Josef Salvat kind of mood.
Explain your sound in 3 words?
Fresh, Honest, Relatable
What is the first thing the upcoming songwriters should do to make it?
Learn an instrument, read books, find your voice, refrain from shallow lyrics. …or just be a DJ
Where do you draw inspiration from when you write songs and what’s your favorite part about the process?
It just has to feel right, it’s hard to explain. When I write a song, I don’t want it to sound just like another song I have written. The process is very frustrating but even more rewarding when I come up with something I like. Then back to frustrating when I have to finish writing it.
Who you would love to work with?
Chance the Rapper, Stephan Jenkins (Third Eye Blind), Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Gorillaz, Jamie T, Tim Armstrong (Rancid)
What is your next goal as a musician?
Tour the world, Perform alongside artists and musicians I respect, become a household name, confidently add guacamole to the burrito bowl, give back.
Tell us about the success of “Sour Patch Kids”? Did you expected to be a hit to have over 1M views on Youtube and more than 4M plays on Spotify?
No I didn’t expect it. I knew it was a good song but I don’t go into writing with the intent of making something a hit, thats where my producer comes in. I’m glad that song was the catalyst though cuz we worked really hard on it
And how was working with Hoodie Allen and joining they’re tour?
It was incredible and damn what a lucky break. I was just sitting in the studio with the engineer struggling to finish a few great songs when all the sudden I get a Twitter message from Hoodie asking me to join his tour with KYLE and Gnash. I had to finish those new songs in two days and then fly out to the east coast to perform them for the first time in front of the massive crowd Hoodie draws. Now I’m going with him to Europe in August as direct support. Funny how things work out.
What are the five things you can’t live without?
Salmon sushi, thai iced tea, my best friends, headphones
What’s your motto or the advice you live by?
Success is when luck and preparation meet. my favorite quote is “We’ll never be younger than we are right now”
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Ignition by R. Kelly, I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith, Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind
