Hi Cerina please tell us a little about yourself?
I’m an actor and writer living in Los Angeles. I’ve done many different types of roles over the last 19 years, but I’m currently “Suzy Diaz,” the mom of 7 kids on Disney’s new STUCK IN THE MIDDLE. I come from a big family, and I’m having a blast on this big family show! It’s a single camera comedy and our writers are brilliant – I’m getting to do really fun work with the best TV family in the world. J Personally, I love yoga, wine, cooking, hiking and chill hang time with my friends and family.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Sensitive, compassionate…and passionate (And Italian – if I can have 4?) J
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada! It was like growing up in a small desert town… I had a pretty humble upbringing with a lot of big family fun. 4 wheelers in the desert. Trips to the mountains in Utah, water skiing on Lake Mead. My mother was a ballet teacher and we had a dance studio in the back of our house, so my childhood was filled with a lot of the arts and make believe, too. I moved to LA in ’97 but always enjoy going back to my hometown!
Who is your role model?
I have a select few very special people in my life who I admire and who have mentored me. I think I take a bit and learn from everyone in my life. I feel really lucky to have such a fascinating group of friends and family and in some form or another Ive been guided by them all. But if I have to pick someone iconic, who’s made a massive impact on our society today and did it all herself? Well, Oprah, of course.
How’s a typical day in your life?
Well, a typical day in my life is probably anything but typical. It’s always different. That’s the fun of this business. If I’m shooting STUCK IN THE MIDDLE, then it’s a healthy fun-filled 12+ hour day on set. And if I’m not shooting, like right now we are on hiatus, then it’s filled with travel for work, emails and meetings, running around to auditions, and normal scheduling and managing that any business needs. I try to carve out time to write and be creative and think up fun short films to make on weekends with my friends. I work to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation every year. I think charity work is very important. But I’m all about balance. I always make time for exercise. And I always try to carve out quiet moments to meditate and recharge. I live a big busy life, with a lot of personal and business obligations, but then I need a lot of “cocoon time” to rest and refuel. I love quiet time with candles, music and just to be able to just “be.” Oh, and wine. I end my day with wine. Like any good Italian girl. 😉
How did you got selected for Disney’s new hit TV show “Stuck In the Middle”? And about your character Suzy Diaz?
Well, It was like any other audition. Except I had never had the opportunity to even read for a role of a mother. I’ve played many types of roles over the last (almost) two decades… but never a mother. It was a shift I was looking to make, but I wasn’t quite sure how to bridge the gap. When I received the audition material, I had a very deep thoughtful feeling that this was supposed to be my role. It felt like it was written for me. But not the “me” the business had previously known. But those close to me know how deeply I love children, and put up with my silly jokes. I knew it was for me… but then I had to go nail the auditions to convince the producers and Disney that this was my role. 🙂 And I did! And I am so grateful to Linda Figeredo and everyone at Disney who fought for me. I’m having a blast playing the kooky, scattered, overwhelmed, nurturing, crazy Suzy Diaz who loves her 7 kids more than anything, yet is always trying to hide from them.
How is your relationship with the other cast members?
Wonderful. I really, truly adore everyone. Joe Nieves plays my TV husband and he is just awesome. He’s a great actor and a great human being. We became instant buddies and are having a blast with the kids and the comedy. And the kids… really, I LOVE them. They have all touched my heart. They are all beautiful, talented little souls and I look forward to every scene with each of their 7 little faces.
Can you share something funny that’s happened to you while filming?
Well, everyday is funny with 7 kids and a great team of writers! But really, it’s the stuff when cameras aren’t rolling that’s hysterical. Im learning all kinds of things from these kids. Like what’s cool now. How to dab, whip, nah nah… they teach me the new lingo of 2016, and what not to say. Like YOLO. Is sooooo OUT. I made that mistake. 😉 They are 7 balls of constant energy, fun and laughs.
And now what other projects you have been part of?
I have a handful of projects that I’m most known for in my career. My very daring, comedic role in NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE. I’m well known in the horror genre from CABIN FEVER! That was a blast and a huge part of my career. And of course the kids know me as “Maya –The Yellow Power Ranger” from my first series, POWER RANGERS LOST GALAXY. Ive done romantic comedies like EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE ITALIAN. And badass sci-fi/action flicks like, MoniKa—and all kinds of roles in between, guest starring on kinds of shows. I really feel like this role on STUCK IN THE MIDDLE is helping me transition as an actor, to new, different, more mature roles.
How would you describe your fashion style?
Haha! “Random?” Or maybe “eclectic” is a better word for it. I look to my girlfriends for fashion advice. I never really know what’s “in” fashion. But I love things that are feminine. I love lace. I love long, easy, pretty dresses. But I also love ripped jeans and old t-shirts. And I could wear yoga clothes everywhere if I didn’t have my best friends telling me not to do it. 🙂
Who is your biggest beauty inspiration?
I love natural beauty. Im a bit horrified by all the plastic surgery and filler and all that business that is happening now. I have yet to do anything like that, and I’m really torn on how I feel about it all. I know the world has always wanted to preserve youth, but knowing that 23 year olds are getting Botox, and 18 year olds are getting breast and butt implants makes me really sad for society. Sorry, I didn’t answer the question. 🙂 Sophia Loren. Kate Winslett. Monica Bellucci. Three stunning women who I feel have aged naturally and effortlessly.
Name one beauty product you can’t live without?
Jojoba Oil. It’s 7.99 from Trader joes. I take off my makeup with it. Put it in my hair. My cuticles. My skin. It’s 100% natural and 100% wonderful.
Favorite designers?
Again, I’m not a fashion person. But I am currently OBSESSED with FOR LOVE AND LEMONS. My friend/ co-star Joey Kern’s (from our film Cabin Fever) wife started the line with her girlfriend. I love their story and I love their clothes!
And tell us about your book “How To Eat Like A Hot Chick: Eat What You Love, Love How You Feel.”
That was the first book of 3 in the series I co-wrote with one of my best friends, Jodi Lipper. Jodi and I felt passionately that their wasn’t a positive voice out there for women giving good old fashioned girlfriend to girlfriend advice. We were also sick of the fad diets. And tired of books about being restrictive. And we were obsessed and saddened by the idea that most women DO NOT feel beautiful! And we wanted to change that. It doesn’t matter what you look like, where you’re from, or what you do, most women feel insecure about so many parts of their lives! Well, we wanted to change that. We redefined the term “Hot ChIck” – It’s not about looking a certain way or being a certain size, but an inner confidence that is truly life changing. HOW TO EAT LIKE A HOT CHICK is irreverent, yet inspiring. It will make you laugh, gives great diet tips, and full permission to indulge in cupcakes and pizza and not feel a shred of guilt about it. It was a best seller and a blast to write! Every woman should read it, because every woman is a Hot Chick. 🙂
