[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our interview with rising “dirty-pop” singer/songwriter/fashionista, Fiona Grey.
At just 21 years old, Fiona is making a name for herself in both the music and fashion worlds, through her cinematic pop music and offbeat sense of style, which she describes as a “rebellious take on classic Hollywood.”
Check her brand new Ones To Watch-featured single, “MONEY” here![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”23979″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]Hi Fiona, Tell us a little about yourself!
Hi! My name is Fiona Grey and I write and perform dirty pop music <3 <3
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get into the industry?
I’ve been writing music since I was really young. One of the first songs I wrote when I was 6 ended up being on a Grammy nominated kid’s record! I was very into musical theatre growing up and bring a lot of that background into my music now.
Do you play any instruments?
I play guitar and I just taught myself how to play piano!
Tell us about your single “Money?”
My new single money is about our religious infatuation with pop culture and the ways we run away from our vices. The song to me was all about the realization that these distractions and vanities aren’t going to fulfill us. It’s the love/hate relationship we have with ourselves.
Do you ever get nervous?
I used to never get nervous before shows, but lately I’ve been a little more nervous. I think it has to do with wanting to meet people’s expectations of you. Before you’ve played a lot, people don’t have a wildly high expectation, but once they have seen you they want you always at your best.
If you could go and work with any artist on tour right now who would it be?
K.Flay – I love other independent musicians and she’s an amazing songwriter and performer!
What inspires you to make new music?
The media, pop culture and heartbreak.
What’s the best and hardest part of being a musician?
Being a musician now isn’t just playing shows and writing music. There is so much more grunt work that people don’t see. Everything from putting together the strategy for the release, booking tours, budgeting money…balancing business and creativity is definitely the hardest.
Who else in your family sings?
My dad and mom are both singers!
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
“Let your light shine from your heart and the world will see you for who you are” – Ralph Covert (a quote from a song my dad wrote to me when I was a baby)
What is you favorite song?
Tempted by Squeeze or Band on the Run by Wings.
Any future plans you want to share with us?
Just getting back from a press tour + show in NYC, traveling every where from Chicago to LA playing shows this summer. I go on tour in the UK mid August. I’m excited for my music video for “Money” to come out soon and my new EP to be released this fall!
What is your next goal as a musician?
I just want to keep growing and topping myself.
Name 3 things you can’t live without?
Three things I can’t without are champagne, my voice and good eyebrows.
What is a normal day like in your life?
I travel so much lately so no day is the same. When I’m living in LA I go to Peets Coffee every morning. Coffee is the only thing that gets me out of bed.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
David Bowie! There’s so much I’d want to talk about and just seeing him in person would be the most religious experience I could imagine.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
A cliche brunch with my best friend Alex, followed by a hike on Fryman, a lil songwriting and then watching Law and Order SVU re-runs.
