Hypothyroidism occurs when your body doesn’t release enough thyroid hormones into the bloodstream. The Problem is usually treated medically but you can also turn to thyroid treatment naturally.
Your thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland that lives in the neck just in front of your windpipe. The main function is to help regulate your body’s metabolism. It does this by releasing two hormones-triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). The common symptoms are:
- tiredness
- being sensitive to cold
- weight gain
- depression
- muscle aches
- slow movements and thoughts
Some people have low levels of these hormones and this is something that can happen at any age. Underactive thyroid can be caused by chronic or terminal paraditis. This is a condition where the body’s own immune system, which normally combats infection, attacks the thyroid gland and damages the thyroid. As a result it cannot produce enough of the thyroid hormones.
The most common form of this is known as hashimoto’s thyroiditis. This can sometimes run in families and maybe link to other autoimmune conditions. It can also occur:
- Post treatment for hyperthyroidism where people have received radioactive iodine treatment
- After surgical removal
- Poor dietary intake of iodine can be a cause of underactive thyroid. In order for the thyroid to make effective levels of thyroxine it requires iodine.
A special gland in your brain also plays an important role in helping to regulate your thyroid function. This is called the pituitary gland. The hormones it produces control so many different processes in the body. It secretes a variety of hormones into the bloodstream. They send signals to transmit information from the pituitary gland to distant cells, regulating their activity.
Medical Treatment
If you are diagnosed with underactive thyroid, your doctor will prescribe you a synthetic thyroxine hormone which is called Levothyroxine. It’s likely you have to take the medication lifelong.
Natural treatment
