Hi Lou Lou, please tell us a little about you?
Hi! My name is Lou Lou Safran, I am a seventeen year old singer-songwriter, actor and artist. I have just released my debut single, and I’m excited to sit down to this interview.
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I have been surrounded by musicians, artists, and filmmakers ever since I was born, so I knew from a very young age that I wanted to pursue a creative path, although I wasn’t sure if I leaned more towards film or music. My first role was at the age of nine in Nicolas Sparks’s The Choice, a sweeping Hollywood romance, directed by the amazing Ross Katz, in which I play the main characters’ daughter, Katie. I quickly fell in love with working on the set, both in front and on the other side of the camera and decided I could not live without it. It wasn’t until a couple of years later that I realized music was just as important to me, when I started writing and recording my songs.
How has this changed your life?
Aside from the obvious changes, like having to spend most of my day practicing, writing, recording and promoting instead of just sitting at school, both singing and acting have given me creative outlets to pour my heart and soul into. Without being able to lose myself in music, or a new character, I think I would spend all my time bouncing off the walls. Writing songs is also my version of therapy, I don’t know how I’d figure out who I am and how I feel without it.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll [laughs].
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I have been obsessed with music ever since my mom played The Beatles’ Love Me Do in the car. Alex Turner and Miles Kane first inspired me to pick up an instrument, but the final push that got me to make music came from watching my mom and my uncle record. I always loved watching them create, both together and separately, and ended up loving the finished product even more. There is no way you can closely watch a musician pour their heart into a project, without falling in love with the process and the craft. I am also a sucker for a great rock gig, and at some point after attending my fiftieth or something concert, I decided I wanted to do more than just play one in my dreams, and that it couldn’t solely consist of covers.
Do you play any instrument?
Absolutely! Playing guitar is one of my favorite things in the world, and I also play piano and the ukulele. The last one is very much inspired by Eddie Vedder.
Tell us about your new single “My Own Yellow Brick Road?”
My debut single is the first of ten songs from the upcoming album. It is one of the more acoustic tracks and I thought that it was the perfect one to start with. It has a very special place in my heart and it was the first song I ever wrote. It feels surreal to have it streaming on every platform, because each time I hear it, it takes me straight back to the moment and the person I was when I wrote it in my room.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Every step of the process brings something unique and exciting, but I think my favorite part is seeing other people listening and relating to my music. I have to pinch myself every time I open any of the “__ For Artists” apps and see the streams and new listeners. Being able to share my work is very special to me, nothing could be more rewarding.
A few years ago we did an interview and it was more towards acting. Are you still doing acting projects? Or is it now all about music?
I definitely have the same passion for film and acting that I did when I was eleven. I have been working on a few projects, but I will admit that it has been music nonstop most recently. I am really looking forward to getting back in front of the camera soon, though. There is a secret project in the works at the moment, but i can’t say much about it yet
What’s next for Lou Lou Safran in 2023?
Most importantly, I plan on releasing the rest of my debut album. You can also expect to see me around LA music venues playing some solo gigs and shows with the new band i just put together.
