Hi Lia, please tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! I’m Lia Snisarenko, an art dealer, curator, and the founder of Art Axcess Gallery in West Hollywood. My journey in the art world has been incredibly rewarding and deeply personal. I specialize in discovering and nurturing emerging contemporary artists from Ukraine, a mission that’s close to my heart. Over the past six years, I’ve worked extensively in the international art market. My role as an art advisor has allowed me to establish valuable connections and successfully integrate European and American contemporary artworks into renowned collections in New York, Florida, and California.
Art Axcess, my gallery in West Hollywood, is more than a space for showcasing art. It’s a platform for cultural exchange and supporting underrepresented voices. I strive to make contemporary art accessible and relatable to everyone, offering fresh perspectives that challenge and enrich the Western art scene. My passion for art and my commitment to cultural exchange continue to drive my work, making each day an exciting new chapter in my journey as a trailblazer in contemporary art dealing.
My dedication to promoting Ukrainian artists is driven not only by national pride but also by personal experience. Having survived the Russian-Ukrainian war and the traumatic experience of being trapped on the conflict’s frontline in February 2022, I understand the profound impact art can have in expressing and healing collective and personal traumas.
Describe yourself in three words.
Visionary. Dedicated. Empathetic.
When did you start in the business?
I began my journey in the art business over six years ago. This experience has been instrumental in shaping my approach to art curation and dealing, especially in promoting Ukrainian contemporary art. I opened my gallery, Art Axcess, in 2023.
Name one of your strengths.
One of my key strengths is identifying and nurturing emerging talent. This skill has been essential in discovering and promoting new and innovative voices in contemporary art.
What is the key to your success?
My success can largely be attributed to my ability to forge meaningful connections between my artists, collectors, and influential figures in the art world. This knack for building relationships and networks has been crucial in promoting and elevating contemporary Ukrainian art on the international stage.
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing the impact it has on both the artists and the art community. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness emerging artists gain recognition and to facilitate cultural exchange through art. Each successful exhibition or placement of artwork in a collection feels like a shared victory.
On the flip side, the challenges can be quite daunting. Navigating the complexities of the international art market, especially amidst geopolitical conflicts like the Russian-Ukrainian war, can be stressful. Additionally, the responsibility of accurately representing and promoting artists’ works requires constant vigilance and dedication, which can be demanding.
Now what about your gallery “Art Axcess?”
Art Axcess, my gallery in West Hollywood, is a vibrant and innovative space dedicated to promoting Ukrainian contemporary art in the United States. It’s more than just a gallery; it’s a platform for cultural exchange and for elevating underrepresented voices in the art world. At Art Axcess, we curate exhibitions that offer fresh perspectives and challenge conventional views in the Western art scene.
The gallery’s environment is welcoming and engaging, designed to make contemporary art accessible to a wide audience. We host a variety of events and exhibitions, aiming to create a dialogue between artists and the community. This interaction is crucial for fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art we showcase.
Running Art Axcess is both exhilarating and challenging. It requires a careful balance of artistic vision and business acumen. However, the opportunity to bring new Ukrainian art to a broader audience and to support the careers of talented artists is incredibly fulfilling and drives the essence of what we do at Art Axcess.
What inspired you to open an art gallery, and how did you get started in this field?
My inspiration to open an art gallery stemmed from a deep-seated passion for art and a desire to create a significant impact in the art world, particularly in promoting Ukrainian contemporary art. The rich cultural heritage and the vibrant art scene of Ukraine, combined with my personal experiences, fueled my drive to showcase these unique artistic voices to a broader audience. Getting started in this field involved a blend of academic preparation and practical experience. My educational background, with degrees in Culture and Arts and Business, provided a strong foundation. My studies at Christie’s Education in New York were particularly influential, offering insights into the art market’s dynamics.
The journey began with building connections in the art world, working as an art advisor, and gaining hands-on experience in the international art market. This experience was crucial in understanding the nuances of art curation and dealing. The decision to open Art Axcess was a natural progression, driven by my desire to create a dedicated space for Ukrainian contemporary art and to foster cultural dialogues through art exhibitions and events. The gallery is a culmination of my vision, dedication, and commitment to the art community.
How do you decide which artists or art pieces to showcase in your gallery?
I follow a few key guidelines when deciding which artists or art pieces to showcase in Art Axcess Gallery. Firstly, I focus on underrepresented voices, particularly emerging Ukrainian contemporary artists who bring fresh and diverse perspectives to the art scene. It’s important for me to give a platform to those who might not have had the opportunity otherwise.
Secondly, I consider the interests of my clients. Understanding their preferences and tastes is crucial in curating a collection that resonates with them. This client-centric approach ensures that the artwork we exhibit not only has artistic merit but also appeals to those who support and invest in the art world.
Lastly, staying attuned to art market trends is essential. The art world is dynamic, and keeping a finger on the pulse of current and emerging trends helps in making informed decisions about what to showcase. This balance of highlighting underrepresented artists, catering to client interests, and aligning with market trends is what shapes the programming at Art Axcess Gallery.
Have you noticed any significant trends in the art world recently, and how have they influenced your gallery’s direction?
Indeed, there are a few key trends in the art world that have significantly influenced the direction of Art Axcess Gallery.
Firstly, there’s a growing interest in abstract paintings, particularly in non-figurative and minimalist styles. This trend aligns with a broader move towards innovative practices that challenge traditional artistic mediums. We embraced this trend with our inaugural exhibition featuring Eugene Lisniak, an emerging Ukrainian abstract artist. His work perfectly embodies the innovative and boundary-pushing spirit we aim to showcase at Art Axcess.
Another significant trend is the blending of physical and digital spaces in the contemporary art market. The importance of online sales and digital presence has grown exponentially, and it continues to be a vital aspect even with the return of in-person events. Recognizing this, we have partnered with the online platform Artsy to display our art online.
Additionally, we utilize a variety of digital marketing strategies, including email newsletters, social media, and our website, to engage with our audience and broaden our reach.
The motivation behind art purchases is also shifting. There’s an increasing focus on self-focused drivers, such as self-identity and personal pleasure. This insight guides our curatorial decisions, ensuring that the art we showcase resonates with these motivations.
Lastly, we are seeing a trend towards focusing on younger collectors and artists. This reflects a generational shift in the art market. At Art Axcess, we’re tapping into this trend by connecting with a younger demographic, both in terms of the artists we represent and the collectors we engage with. This approach is not only about staying current but also about shaping the future of the art market.
What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a gallery owner, and how do you address them?
As a gallery owner, there are several challenges that I face, each requiring a unique approach to address them effectively.
One of the biggest challenges is staying relevant in the ever-evolving art market. This industry is dynamic, with changing trends and tastes. To address this, I ensure that I’m constantly learning and adapting, keeping abreast of market trends and emerging artists. I also make it a point to listen to feedback from clients and artists, which helps in making informed decisions about exhibitions and collections.
Another significant challenge is balancing the commercial aspects of running a gallery with the artistic vision. The art world is not just about creativity; it’s also a business. To tackle this, I focus on sound financial management and strategic planning, ensuring that the gallery remains profitable while still honoring its artistic integrity.
Networking and building relationships in the art world can also be demanding. Establishing connections with artists, collectors, and other galleries is crucial for success. I address this by actively participating in art fairs, exhibitions, and other industry events. It’s also important to maintain a strong online presence, which helps in expanding our network globally.
Additionally, the shift towards digitalization poses both an opportunity and a challenge. Embracing digital tools and online sales platforms is essential in today’s market. We’re continually updating our digital strategy to enhance our online presence and reach a wider audience.
Finally, there’s the challenge of representing and promoting artists in a way that’s true to their vision while appealing to collectors. This requires a deep understanding of the artists’ work and effective communication with potential buyers. We address this by working closely with our artists to understand their processes and inspirations, which allows us to represent their work authentically and compellingly.
Each of these challenges presents an opportunity for growth and learning, and addressing them head-on is what makes running a gallery both exciting and rewarding.
How do you attract and engage with your audience, especially in an increasingly digital world?
Attracting and engaging with our audience in today’s digital world involves a multi-faceted approach that combines traditional gallery experiences with innovative digital strategies.
Firstly, we maintain a strong online presence. This includes a user-friendly, visually appealing website showcasing our current exhibitions, artists, and available artworks. We also leverage social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to share behind-the-scenes glimpses, artist stories, and updates about upcoming events, which helps in building a community around the gallery.
Partnering with online art platforms such as Artsy is another strategy. These platforms allow us to reach a global audience, providing greater visibility for our artists and their works. They’re particularly effective in attracting new collectors who may not have the opportunity to visit the gallery in person.
Email marketing is another tool we use to engage with our audience. By sending out regular newsletters, we keep our subscribers informed about new exhibitions, gallery news, and special events. These emails are tailored to provide value, whether it’s insights into the art market or exclusive previews of new collections.
In the gallery space itself, we ensure the visitor experience is memorable and engaging. We host various events, which helps build a sense of community and encourages repeat visits.
Finally, personal interactions and relationships remain at the core of our engagement strategy. We take the time to understand our clients’ preferences and interests, offering personalized recommendations and services. This high level of personal engagement is crucial in building lasting relationships with collectors and art enthusiasts.
Are there any particular artists or art movements that you are personally fond of or would recommend to new collectors?
As an art dealer and curator with a passion for contemporary art, there are several artists and art movements I personally admire.
In terms of art movements, I have a deep appreciation for Abstract Expressionism, a post-World War II art movement known for its focus on spontaneous, automatic, or subconscious creation. Minimalism is another movement that resonates with me. Its emphasis on simplicity, clean lines, and monochromatic palettes can be profoundly impactful. Minimalist art works well in a variety of spaces and often appeals to collectors who appreciate a more modern, understated aesthetic.
In terms of contemporary artists, I am particularly drawn to those who are innovating within these movements or blending different styles to create something unique. Ukrainian artist Feros, featured in our gallery’s latest exhibition, combines street art influence, surrealism, and figurative styles to create his profound canvases.
For new collectors, I often recommend starting with emerging artists. These artists offer fresh perspectives and can be more accessible in terms of investment. Collecting works from emerging artists also provides the unique opportunity to support and follow an artist’s career as it evolves.
Ultimately, the most important thing for new collectors is to choose art that resonates with them personally. Art collecting is not just about financial investment; it’s about finding pieces that speak to you and enhance your space and life. Therefore, while I can provide guidance, I always encourage collectors to trust their instincts and choose art that they feel a personal connection with.
What advice would you give to someone who is new to art collecting or interested in starting their own collection?
I would emphasize the importance of education and personal exploration for anyone new to art collecting or looking to start their collection.
It’s crucial to start with a solid foundation of knowledge. Engage in learning about different art forms, styles, and historical periods. Visiting galleries, museums, and art fairs is not only educational but also inspiring. Perhaps the most important aspect of collecting art is to develop and understand your own taste. Spend time exploring different types of art to see what truly resonates with you. This could be a specific art style, medium, or even themes and subjects. Your art collection should be a reflection of your personal journey and tastes. It’s not just about the monetary value of the pieces but about how they speak to you and fit into your life.
What are your future goals for the gallery, and how do you see it evolving in the coming years?
Looking towards the future of Art Axcess Gallery, my goals are centered around growth, collaboration, and broader participation in the art community.
A key goal is to expand the range of artists we represent. This means not only increasing the number of artists but also diversifying the types of art we showcase. We aim to enrich the gallery’s collection and offer a wider array of narratives and artistic expressions to our audience.
I believe strongly in the power of collaboration. In the coming years, I plan to forge partnerships with other galleries, cultural institutions, and artists. These collaborations can take many forms, from joint exhibitions to co-hosted events. Such partnerships not only enhance our gallery’s offerings but also strengthen our position in the art community.
In the future, I see Art Axcess taking a more active role in art fairs. These evnts are vital platforms in the art world, offering visibility, networking opportunities, and the chance to keep abreast of current trends and market dynamics. Participation in art fairs will allow us to showcase our artists to a broader audience and connect with collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts from around the globe.
Overall, the vision for Art Axcess Gallery is to grow as a dynamic and influential space in the contemporary art scene, known for its diverse representation, collaborative spirit, and active participation in the broader art community.
The art business is very competitive. What do you do to stay on top of the game and to promote your gallery?
Staying competitive in the art business requires a strategic and multifaceted approach.
We focus on curating unique and engaging exhibitions that draw interest from both regular patrons and new visitors. By showcasing a diverse range of artists and art forms, especially emerging and underrepresented talents, we offer something fresh and exciting to our audience.
In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial. We maintain an active and engaging social media profile, regularly update our website with current exhibitions and available works, and utilize online art platforms to reach a global audience.
Establishing and maintaining strong relationships within the art community is vital. This includes connecting with artists, collectors, other gallery owners, and art critics. Networking helps in creating opportunities for collaborations and staying informed about industry trends.
Attending art fairs and industry events is essential for visibility and keeping up with market trends.
Providing personalized experiences for our clients and engaging with them through events, private viewings, and art consultations helps in building loyalty and repeat patronage.
Staying informed about the latest trends, market shifts, and new technologies in the art world is crucial. Continuous learning and adaptation ensure the gallery remains relevant and ahead of the curve.
Any advice to entrepreneurs out there?
Learn from Failures. Every entrepreneur faces setbacks. It’s important to see failures as learning opportunities. Analyze what went wrong, adapt, and move forward. Remember, entrepreneurship is a journey with its highs and lows. Stay committed, be patient, and keep pushing forward. Your unique vision and perseverance are what will define your success.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
I highly recommend reading “Principles” by Ray Dalio. Dalio, the founder of Bridgewater Associates, one of the world’s largest hedge funds, shares the guiding principles he’s learned and developed over his career to create unique results in both life and business.
The book is particularly valuable for entrepreneurs because it offers a candid view into the thought processes and management strategies of a highly successful business leader. Dalio emphasizes the importance of radical transparency and thoughtful disagreement in organizational cultures, which can be invaluable for anyone running a business.
Dalio also delves into personal growth and learning from mistakes, stressing the importance of setting audacious goals and dealing effectively with the challenges and setbacks that arise in pursuing them.
Overall, “Principles” provides a blend of personal anecdotes and professional advice, offering insights that can be applied not just to entrepreneurship but to life decisions as well. It’s a book that encourages readers to think critically about their own principles and how they can apply them to achieve their goals.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is a state of fulfillment and contentment that comes from pursuing and living in alignment with my values and passions. It’s about finding a balance between life’s various aspects– personal growth, meaningful work, and relationships.
Happiness, to me, is not a constant state of euphoria but rather a deep sense of satisfaction and gratitude for the journey of life, with all its ups and downs. It’s about embracing both the successes and the challenges, as they are all integral to personal development and fulfillment.
Moreover, happiness involves connecting with others, contributing to something larger than oneself, and finding joy in the small moments of everyday life. It’s a dynamic, evolving state that requires ongoing effort and introspection to maintain and nurture.
What is next for Lia Snisarenko in 2024?
Looking ahead to 2024, my focus will be on further expanding and enhancing the impact of Art Axcess Gallery.
Something people don’t know about you?
One aspect of my life that people may not know about is my deep interest in cultural anthropology. Aside from my professional focus on art, I have always been fascinated by how different cultures express themselves and how these expressions shape societal values and norms. This passion has led me to travel extensively and immerse myself in various cultural environments. Through the years, I have traveled to more than 50 countries worldwide. These experiences have enriched my perspective on art and life, providing a broader context in which to understand the diverse narratives and backgrounds of the artists I work with. This multidimensional approach to art and culture is a subtle yet integral part of my work and life philosophy.
Who was your role model as a child?
As a child, my role model was my grandfather. He was a remarkable individual, known for his wisdom, kindness, and artistic talent. He had a deep appreciation for art and culture, which he passionately shared with me. His stories and perspectives on life not only fueled my interest in art but also shaped my values and outlook. His approach to life, which emphasized integrity, perseverance, and compassion, left a lasting impression on me. He taught me the importance of following my passions, working hard, and treating others with respect and empathy. These lessons have been invaluable in both my personal journey and professional career. My grandfather’s influence is evident in my commitment to promoting cultural understanding through art and in the way I conduct my business. His legacy continues to inspire and guide me in many aspects of my life.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I had the opportunity to meet someone from history, it would be Frida Kahlo. Her profound impact on art and culture, coupled with her extraordinary life story, has always been a source of inspiration to me. Kahlo was a gifted artist and a symbol of resilience and authenticity.
Her ability to translate her personal experiences, especially her physical and emotional pain, into profoundly moving and powerful works of art is something that resonates strongly with me. I admire how she embraced her identity and experiences, including her heritage and struggles, to create art that was both unique and universal in its appeal.
Moreover, her impact as a female artist in a male-dominated field during her time is a testament to her strength and determination. As someone deeply involved in promoting underrepresented voices in the art world, I find her journey and the legacy she left behind both motivating and instructive. Frida Kahlo’s life and work continue to inspire artists and art enthusiasts around the world, and having a conversation with her would be a truly remarkable experience.
What is your favorite healthy food?
My favorite healthy food is a classic Mediterranean salad. This refreshing and nutritious dish combines a variety of fresh vegetables like cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, and bell peppers. I love adding Kalamata olives and a sprinkle of feta cheese for an extra burst of flavor.
And your favorite cheat food?
French fries are indeed my go-to cheat food. There’s something irresistibly satisfying about their crispy exterior and fluffy interior, especially when they’re perfectly salted and maybe accompanied by a favorite dipping sauce.
In five years from now, where do you see yourself and your career?
In five years from now, I see myself as a more influential and connected figure in the art world, leading a gallery that showcases exceptional art and contributes positively to the art community and society at large.
Do you support any charities?
Yes, I am actively involved in supporting various Ukrainian charities. My focus is primarily on organizations that offer humanitarian assistance, especially in light of recent events in Ukraine. To name a few, I support Razom for Ukraine, Stand with Ukraine Foundation and Front Art.
What do you like to watch on Tv?
I rarely watch TV, but when I do, I have a preference for reality TV shows as they offer a form of light entertainment that allows me to unwind and relax. One of my go-to shows is “90 Day Fiancé” on TLC. I find the dynamics and challenges of the couples in the show quite intriguing. It’s a unique blend of reality, romance, and the complexities of relationships spanning different cultures and countries. Watching this show is a way for me to switch off from the demands of my daily routine and enjoy some easy-viewing entertainment.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car or for karaoke?
“Girl Gone Wild” by Madonna. It’s such a high-energy and empowering song, with a catchy beat that’s perfect for belting out.
3 things you can’t leave home without
Phone, car key, lip balm
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
My idea of a perfect Sunday revolves around relaxation and simplicity. It would involve spending time by the pool in my backyard, immersed in the tranquility of my own space.
I’d start with a refreshing swim, followed by some quality time lounging with a good book, letting myself get lost in its pages. To add to the ambiance, I’d have a pot of tea, enjoying its soothing warmth and aroma as I relax. This combination of leisurely activities in the comfort of my home provides a perfect balance of relaxation and indulgence, recharging me for the week ahead. Sundays like these are a gentle reminder of the joys found in life’s simple pleasures.
What do you think of Social Media?
My view on social media is that it’s a powerful and multifaceted tool. It has the potential to be immensely beneficial, especially in the art world, where it serves as a platform for artists to showcase their work, connect with audiences globally, and build communities around shared interests.
However, it’s also important to approach social media with a degree of mindfulness. The digital space can sometimes create pressures around constant connectivity and the need to present a curated image of success or perfection. Balancing its use, ensuring it serves a purpose without overwhelming or dictating one’s life or business strategy, is key.
