Following a childhood comprised of watching her rock-turned-country musician father make a living and eventually making a name for herself doing the same, Canadian country singer-songwriter Danielle Todd made the move to Nashville, Tennessee. Cutting her teeth day in and day out under the neon lights of Broadway, she quickly learned the grit it takes to survive an industry that sometimes takes as much as it gives. It wasn’t long before she met country producer Grady James, and working exclusively in tandem with him, they unveiled her sound: a formula of pop/soul, rock, and classic country to become what Danielle best describes as “classic country gone pop.” With the pop sensibilities of the likes of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, a focus on country acoustic elements, and a little bit of quirkiness Danielle finds indicative of her sound, songs like her debut single, “Crazy,” came to be. Released in early 2019, “Crazy,” co-penned with Bobbi Holliday and Caitie Thompson, took Danielle to higher heights, achieving accolades like having over 50,000 spins online, reaching #1 on Winnipeg’s Now Country 104.7 and being a finalist in both the Unpublished Songwriting Competition and the International Songwriting Competition. The fresh, upbeat tune even went so far as to enjoy a spot at #80 on Canada’s Trax Report and #34 on Australia’s Top 50.

Hi Danielle, please tell us a little about you?
I am originally from Guelph, ON but I currently live in Nashville. I am a country singer/songwriter and I grew up in a musical family.
Who has made the biggest impact on your life so far, and why?
I’d say my family. I know that’s a broad statement, but I am so close with my parents, sister, aunts and uncles and even cousins. They all have influenced me either musically or personally. I make a point to keep in touch with as many people in my family as I can, and I have a HUGE family. They’re all loving and they’re my closest friends.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Country, classic twist!
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I grew up with music in my family, so it was no question in my mind that music was what I needed to do. I never really made the choice to do it, I just started making it my livelihood and never looked back.
What is your next goal as a musician?
I set goals every day! I ultimately want to continue releasing music and perform as much as possible. I am working towards an EP, and want to travel as much as I can to take my music to new places.
Do you have a Tour coming up or where we can see you performing?
Yes! I am actually doing a Christmas tour in December, then in January I will be touring Australia. The details are not all released yet. The best way to stay up to date is to follow on Facebook, or sign up on my website for updates.
Now tell us about your new single “Back Burner?”
This song was super fun to write and record. The song is all about walking away from a relationship that is unhealthy. Sometimes we stay in a back and forth relationship longer than we really should. This is all about getting the heck out of there. The production was fun as well. I like to keep acoustic elements involved in all my music and try to pull a “classic country” sound. My producer, Grady James, knows that is important to me, so he added banjo, dobro and acoustic guitars. It’s an upbeat, confident, fiery song and I’m excited for everyone to hear it.
What inspired the music video for “Back Burner?”
The idea came to me while I was driving through the green Tennessee hills. I thought “I want to shoot this in the desert, secluded, with a fire dancer.” Lucky for me, nobody told me I was crazy! I hired “Zor” the fire dancer, and headed to Joshua Tree. I figured the video could be about getting myself so far away from a relationship that I end up in the secluded desert.

And about the success of your debut single “Crazy?”
Wasn’t that cool? I didn’t know what to expect with my first single, but I couldn’t be happier with the results. I am excited that it charted in both Canada and Australia, and has over 50 thousand spins online.
What we can expect of Danielle Todd in 2019/2020?
A Christmas single and tour, and then I’ll be headed to the land down under to tour and perform at their Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Any loves other than music?
Horseback riding, crochet, cooking and reading. I really love to relax and have downtime when I’m not working. I love checking out coffee shops and finding new restaurants if I have a little bit of extra cash that week too!
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would really love to sit down with John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I’m sure lots of people say that, but I think it would be really interesting to hear how they grew up and what the music scene was like during Beatlemania. I’m sure they would have lots of invaluable advice. Plus, they would have a lot of insane stories!
