Hi Laroie, please tell us a little about you?
My name is Gab, I’m from Montreal and I’ve been creating under the moniker Laroie for about 1 year and a half.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
– vibrante – goofy – positive
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I started about 10 year ago with the band Heartstreets. I didn’t know what I was doing back when I started, or where the music industry would bring me and now it’s been 2 years of self discovery through my solo project and it’s the best. I’ve grown so much through all those years of experience and I’m finally exploring my musical identity through Laroie.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
dazzling – self-possessed – soulful
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I’ve always loved to sing, since I was a kid I would participate in musical camps, talent shows and just sing whenever I had the chance. I think from a young age I was expressing a lot of my emotions through singing.
Do you play any instrument?
I’m what you call a self-taught artist. I can have fun on the piano when working on a new piece but a lot of my creation comes from within and my forte is freestyle and self-abandonment through music.
Do you ever get nervous?
Ya, I think it’s important to be a bit nervous in this industry and when performing, especially because that’s what makes it even more exciting. If I took it all for granted I don’t think I would be where I am right now.
Tell us about your new single “One More?”
“One More” is a reflection on temptation, desire, and loss of control. Overcoming an addiction prompts us to roam the bowels of our own egos, sometimes guiding us to the less tame facets of ourselves.
What’s the story behind this song?
It’s about always wanting more and losing control of yourself. It’s a ride with what controls the darkness in you in a way…
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
It’s the best because I thrive in what I do and end up learning so much about myself. It comes, of course, with a lot of responsibilities and pressure, but that’s how it is in everything you do. If you are passionate about it, you will give your 150% and face a lot of challenges. But that’s just life in my opinion. You need to be hungry for what you want to accomplish.
What are the five things you can’t live without?
– my family
– my friends
– my plants
– dancing
– and of course music 🙂
What’s next for Laroie in 2021?
Well “One More” is the second single off an upcoming EP which will be released at the end of the summer! I’m really excited to release this project because it holds a special place in my heart and I really feel like I’ve connected to the environment I want to create in.
Best advice ever given?
Do not let yourself be guided by your fears and there is no point in anticipating, because we do not know what the future holds.
Name one your strengths?
Patience
What is your own definition of happiness?
Being grateful and fully conscient in the present moment.
Do you support any charities?
I don’t support specific charities directly but I’m involved in volunteering with a foundation for people with intellectual disabilities.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Touring the world with my music!!
