For country artist Adam Mac, growing up in small town Kentucky was the catalyst for a life of writing, recording and performing music that is as authentic to his upbringing as possible. On his brand new, double album Disco Cowboy Adam connects with two sides of his personality to create an incredibly cohesive and groovy record that can inspire everything from a dance party to a good cry. We got to chat with Adam prior to the album’s arrival to dig a bit deeper into his inspiration, the success of the title track “Disco Cowboy” and the lessons he’s learned so far on his journey.

Hi Adam, for those that don’t know, could you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a country singer living in Nashville Tennessee. I infuse soul and funk music with my Kentucky roots to make music that is uniquely my own.
We’re sure you have been asked this a million times but how did you get your start in the music industry? Was there a person or moment that encouraged you to pursue a music career?
I always had a love for music, even from early on. I was always singing, dancing and dressing up. My mom certainly encouraged it, and sometimes even bribed me to sing in church! But it wasn’t until my senior year of highschool that I really started writing music and seriously considering the idea that I could move to Nashville and do this for real.
How would you describe your sound in 3 words?
Funky, soulful, twang
If you weren’t a musical artist, what would you be up to right now?
Ok so I was the weird kid watching nature documentaries and the crocodile Hunter instead of cartoons, soooo I like to think had music not been my calling I’d be working at the Nashville zoo right now!! Hahaha but for real.
Tell us about your latest song “Take Myself Home.” What’s the story behind the song?
I wrote it with my now good friends Mary Beth and Josh Sudduth. It was our first time ever writing together which can sometimes be tricky, but the energy in the room was magic that day. It was such a fun session, we all had the same goal in mind, create a country funk song that exudes self love, and independence.
How has the success of “Disco Cowboy” changed your life?
Well it certainly put me in front of a larger audience than I’ve ever experienced. But I think more personally, it gave me a little boost of confidence that although, yes I’m making music that doesn’t exactly sound like “traditional country music” there is still an audience for it that relates and connects to my story, and that’s really special.
How would you explain your fashion style?
It’s like if your grandmother and Elton John’s closets got jumbled up and you blindly started pulling out articles of clothing. Very that.
What would say is the greatest lesson you learned so far?
To not compare your journey with other peoples. That is the enemy of creativity. I love to cheer on my peers and celebrate their wins because I have no doubts one day my time will come.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Stop suppressing your creative energy because you’re scared of what others might think. I wish I had had the courage to live as boldly as I do now, when I was younger.
What’s next for Adam Mac in 2023?
I’m releasing my new album this summer! Well actually it’s a double album called Disco Cowboy. Side A is aptly titled The Disco and Side B, The Cowboy. The disco side is what I like to refer to as “Funktry” it’s got horns and groovy bass lines and you just can’t help but dance to it. The Cowboy side is more of a stripped back sound inspired by my home state of Kentucky. It tells stories from the queer perspective, growing up in the south.
