What is your workout routine these days?
I’m currently training for my first Triathlon! So, my fitness routine consists of a lot of running, biking outdoors, riding my Peloton, weight training 1-2x per week, and swimming. I balance this all out with daily Qigong and stretching after every workout.
Any fitness tips for our readers to be in shape after the lockdown?
If you’re starting from zero, the best thing to do is to begin walking daily. You can make it a post-dinner routine with the family or the first thing you do when you wake up. Aim to walk 3 miles daily.
If you were in great shape before lockdown and fell off the wagon hard, the best thing to do is START SLOW! You want to listen to your body as it currently stands and not jump right into the same level of intensity you were training at before the lockdown. It might feel like you’re starting from the beginning but if you take it slow you minimize the risk of injury and because you have a great foundation from your pre-lockdown training, you’ll quickly regain your strength and begin to build again in no time.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
As actors we get to play roles that can impact the lives of our viewers. Having the opportunity to be part of The CW’s Batwoman allows me to reach young adults in the LGBTQIA+ community and give them a character they can relate to. My hope is that my character work helps people feel less alone and inspires courage when they need a little boost. When shows successfully unite an audience they create a strong fan base. That base often times blossoms into a supportive community of its own where people find friendship and acceptance.
What did you learn from your biggest failure?
Perseverance! I believe if I learn something from a perceived failure, then it wasn’t a failure at all.
What’s your advice for the newer actresses/writers?
I believe in a mix of life experiences and a supportive acting class/community. Live as much as possible and immerse yourself in various cultures. Then find a studio that allows you to experiment with bringing these lessons and characters you’ve met along the way to life. You also need to develop a strong sense of discipline. With so many NOs it’s easy to lose motivation, but discipline is what will keep you moving forward in your time of doubt and eventually help you reach your goals.
What’s next for Bevin Bru in 2021?
2021 is blossoming into the new normal and I hope it will continue to be a year of growth both professionally and personally. My sister inspired me to take on the physical challenge of completing my first triathlon this year so I’m both nervous and excited for that! I also look forward to the challenges I will face with the characters I will be playing this year. You always overcome an obstacle with every character you play.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I love making my vegan take on “Picadillo” with Beyond Meat. I use a Chimichurri sauce and Pico de Gallo as my base and mix in some olives and peppers. It’s perfection!
And your favorite cheat food?
Every Sunday is cheat day and I always order Thai food. I’ll order either Fried Rice and Curry or Pad Thai and Curry. Then I finish the meal off with some Sweet Loren’s cookies. They are gluten free, dairy free and delicious.
How would you explain your fashion style?
My fashion style is heavily influenced by the 80s and 90s. I love the high waisted fit and the shoulder pads from the 80s. The 90’s to me were a perfect mix of the feminine and masculine elements with some heavy sex appeal. However, I’m usually running around in some form of workout clothes.
What is your own definition of happiness?
I believe you’ve reached happiness when you can honestly say, you would die with no regrets.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
It would have to be David Bowie. He influenced me so much as a person. I remember coming home after school in my late teens and putting on the Ziggy Stardust Concert DVD and just watching it beginning to end with tears running down my face from my adoration and inspiration.
Best advice ever given?
The best advice I’ve received is to trust myself.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
In 5 years, I see myself as a heavy reoccurring character on a TV show and filming a major film simultaneously. I’ll also have produced and starred in an original work of my own.
Favorite song? Why?
This is a tough one! I’ve had so many favorite songs, so I’ll have to do top 3, ugh still so hard!
1. Life of Mars by David Bowie – I would listen to this song on repeat in 9th grade and the song still gets me to this date. I even completed a painting of Bowie from the music video.
2. Rasputin by Boney M – I rediscovered this song on TikTok and there is just something about it that drives my body wild when I hear it!
3. Happy House by Siouxsie and The Banshees – Senior year I had a band and we had one song and it was a cover of Happy House. That bass is fire!
What do you think of Social Media?
Social Media is now completely integrated into most people’s lives. It’s a blessing because we are able to connect with people outside our mile radius. Movements have been started using social media that have impacted the world. I do believe there needs to be a healthy balance between your virtual persona and your “real life” self. Things like waiting until after your breakfast to check social media, taking one day off a week to go “offline”, or limiting your screen time on your phone can help you stay present and grounded while still enjoying all the fun of social media!
