Check out our interview with DC Universe & CW’s “Stargirl” actress Joy Osmanski.
Joy portrays the infamous villainess ‘Paula Brooks,” aka Tigress. Best known for her skills in hand-to-hand combat and extensive weapons background, ‘Tigress’ is one of DC Universe’s deadliest non-superpower villains. CW’s “Stargirl” tells the story of high school sophomore ‘Courtney Whitmore,’ who discovers a powerful cosmic staff. After learning that her stepfather Pat Dugan used to be a hero sidekick, she becomes the inspiration for a new generation of superheroes. The new hard-hitting superhero drama also includes Luke Wilson, Amy Smart, and Brec Bassinger.
Joy can also be seen in FOX’s newest Animation Domination series “Duncanville.”

Hi Joy, please tell us a little about you?
I’m a first-generation Asian American, by way of international adoption. I grew up in the almost constantly damp Pacific Northwest, and I loved it. I am a mama in three ways: step, adoptive and biological.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Almost always hungry.
Who is your role model?
My children.
How did you get started into acting?
I was unsatisfied with my work as a graphic designer and realized I missed collaborating with other artists.
How has this changed your life?
I have become very accustomed to almost constant uncertainty.
Tell us about your work in “Stargirl?”
Working on Stargirl has been unlike any other experience I’ve had. Every element — from how I prepared for the role, to the wardrobe, to how the show is produced –– it was all eye-opening and thrilling for me.
And about your character Paula Brooks aka Tigress?
Playing two sides of the same coin has been so much fun. I think we all have different public and private personas — some more extreme than others. Paula has crafted a polished, poised exterior, but underneath, Tigress is thrumming. Getting to explore both aspects of this character is incredibly satisfying.
Congrats on Duncanville being picked up for a second season and being promoted to a series regular! Tell us about your character Jing? Have you already started recording for the new season?
Thank you so much! Jing is on the opposite end of the spectrum than Tigress, so playing a five-year-old while also playing a supervillain was a trip. I would describe Jing as kind of the eye of the storm in a family prone to misadventure…but she wouldn’t have it any other way. And as an adoptee myself, it is wonderful to represent that onscreen, as well, in a completely matter-of-fact way. We’ve just started working on Season 2, which is a lovely, lucky way to spend time.
What kind of roles do you like to take on, or would like to play and why?
I enjoy taking on roles that make me uncomfortable. Roles that challenge my ideas about who I am and what I believe.
What other projects you have been part of?
Right before the world closed, back in February, I shot an episode of a Hulu anthology titled Monsterland. It was a completely unique experience, and I’m excited for it to be shared.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Collaborating with all the different creative departments. Wardrobe, hair and makeup, set dec, props, lighting, sound…it’s a rush to be surrounded by people, at the top of their game, all working toward the same creative goal.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Steel cut oatmeal.
And your favorite cheat food?
Popeyes.
How would you explain your fashion style?
Currently leaning heavily on what’s relatively clean and comfortable.
How would your best friend describe you?
Hopefully in loving words, with all that years of friendship entails.
What’s next for Joy Osmanski in 2020?
Wearing a mask and voting because my life depends on it.
What is your own definition of happiness?
The safety and security of the people I love.
How is a normal day in your life?
Nowadays, it’s moment to moment. Just trying to focus on what I can affect. Giving my kids a childhood. Remembering to drink water.
What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
Slow, peaceful awakening. Brunch with family and friends. Attempting to read and falling asleep. Discovering my favorite snack behind something in the cupboard. Playing outside with my kids.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
John Lewis just passed. I would have liked to have met him, even briefly. He was a true superhero.
Best advice ever given?
If you’re coming to LA to be an actor, be prepared to have a 20-year plan.
Do you support any charity?
I am passionate about Alice’s Kids. @alicewillhelp on Twitter.
Name 3 things you can’t live without.
Floss. Lip balm. Books.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
Evolved in ways I could never predict.
Favorite song? Why?
Right now it’s Talk is Cheap by Chet Faker. Feels good in my ears.
What music do you like?
Anything but Frozen.
What do you think of Social Media?
I think it’s inevitable.
Where we can follow you?
