Please tell us a little about you?
Hi! We’re Summer and Torrey. We’re a sister band based in LA.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Thoughtful synth pop
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
Torrey: Summer has always been the best big sister to me and my biggest influence. She started playing and writing a little before me, but once I was a little older I couldn’t help but want to join in. When I was 12 or 13 she started taking me to all sorts of live shows which also really opened my eyes to the world of music.
Summer: My earliest recollection of getting into music was on my 9th birthday getting “Jagged Little Pill” by Alanis and “What’s The Story Morning Glory” by Oasis. They definitely sparked my interest into music and singing. In high school I met a friend who always brought his guitar to school which inspired me to get one of my own and I taught myself how to play some chords and started writing songs to express my teen dramas and heartbreaks.
Tell us about your new single “New Friends?”
This is our favorite track on the record. It’s a song about turning your sadness into optimism and becoming someone new.
What’s the story behind the song?
We wrote New Friends during a time in our lives where we wanted to be around people who didn’t know us at all. We had just lost our mom and were feeling like we needed a fresh start. Sometimes that can come in the form of surrounding yourself with new people and having new experiences, with no expectation of who you used to be.
PS we still love our friends 😉
And tell us a bit about your previous single “Ted Lasso?”
At its core, Ted Lasso is a story of love and loss. The day we lost our mom, we couldn’t sleep, so we watched Ted Lasso until the early hours of the morning with our family in our childhood home. Those moments will forever be etched into our memory.
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
There’s something really special about making music. It’s such a tough industry, but when you’re creating, its magic. That joy is what makes it all worth it.
And then to know that someone else might get to experience that same joy or catharsis by listening to your music is pretty special too.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Torrey: Practice piano! It’s my primary instrument, and I wish I had started so much sooner. Our mom tried to teach us when we were young, and we refused.
Summer: There is no way to predict or plan the outcome of your life, so don’t think too far ahead and enjoy the little things.
How would you explain your fashion style?
Torrey: 90s girlie
Summer: Jeans and vintage t-shirt-type gal
We both love thrifting and buy almost everything second-hand.
Best advice ever given?
Not sure about advice, but a quote we love and think of often is “Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be” by André De Shields. It’s just so true, when you rush you make a bigger mess out of things and have to spend more time cleaning it up.
What’s next for JOYNER in the last months of 2023 and for 2024?
We are excited to release our debut record in 2024!
Where can we follow you?
