INTERVIEW
Hi Adara, tell us about you?
Hello 🙂 I’m an electronic artist and songwriter. Originally from Colorado, I now split my time between Nashville and Atlanta working with Archipelago Entertainment. Along with music, I’m passionate about futuristic fashion and environmental conservation. My goal through music is to remind people that we are all made of stars and have the capabilities to live extraordinary lives.
How did you begin your career?
I’ve been writing music since I was little, but it wasn’t until I moved to Nashville in 2008 that I really honed my craft. Originally writing pop alternative music, I met my producer Ross Lara during a co-write and fell in love with electronic music. Since that day, I entered the world of electronica and never looked back. Ross founded his company Archipelago Entertainment and brought me on board along with The Spacies as the flagship artists. I couldn’t be happier!
When did you first start singing?
I’ve been singing since I was a little girl, old enough to hold a microphone and sing into my karaoke machine.
What inspired you to do what you did?
It’s funny because no one in my family is really musical. My mom did sing to me a lot as a little girl, though, so I imagine that that joy I felt from music sparked this passion in me that has grown with every passing year.
Who are your musical inspirations?
I grew up listening to the Rolling Stones and The Eagles. I learned a lot about story telling from them. My more recent inspirations are Coldplay , U2, and Ellie Goulding. I love their soundscapes and big choruses.
How hard was it to live your dream?
It’s difficult to chase after a dream when you are constantly reminded that the odds are against you, that’s it’s near impossible to sky rocket to the top. However, music is a passion. It’s not something I want to do, it’s something I HAVE to do. I couldn’t live without it. Thanks to the constant support from my parents and friends, I’ve been able to keep working year after year. It feels great putting out music now and getting support. I think 2015 is going to be a defining year!
What kind of music do you listen to today?
I listen to all kinds of music. For me, it’s all about the song and how powerful it is. I chose different types of music depending on what mood I’m in that day. I LOVE listening to classical music in the car.
Do you envision a career as a singer?
Absolutely. I love to perform my own music and convey the emotions I’m trying to express through my songwriting. I want to create a world with my music and I can’t wait to hit the road this year as well as collaborate with some of my favorite DJ’s. Singing is just as much a passion for me as songwriting. I don’t think I could separate the two.
Do you play any instruments?
I play the piano and guitar. I am currently learning the guitar and the accordion. I would love to learn bass after that. I love being able to create with multiple instruments because each one has a special tone that evokes a different emotion and mood. It really helps to switch up instruments when songwriting because it adds variety.
How you got involved in the EDM?
I got involved in Electronic Dance Music after meeting my producer, and founder of Archipelago Entertainment, Ross Lara. He introduced me to this amazing and multifaceted genre and I fell in love with it. Electronic Dance Music is such an expansive and ever evolving genre. It really gives me the freedom to create whatever I imagine without any restrictions. I’ve always been drawn to movies and lyrics that lived more in the realm of fantasy. I love adding a hint of magic and beauty to my stories, so when I first entered this genre I finally felt like I had found my home.
Did you take formal voice lessons?
For most of my life I was self taught, but in the past few years I have been taking formal voice lessons. My voice is my instrument and I want to fine tune it and make sure I have the best training possible. It’s just like having a personal trainer at the gym. Coaches help you improve your skill sets.
What genre of music can’t you stand to listen to?
I’m open to all genres. It’s just about whether I click with a particular song or not.
What hidden talents do you have?
I can play the recorder (flute) with my nose…but I doubt I’ll be using that skill any time soon during a live show. 🙂 I also love riding horses.
Favorite DJ/Producer?
Zedd
Favorite Festival?
Enchanted Forest
Who you would love to work with?
AWOL Nation, Andy Moor, Super8 and Tab, Imogen Heap, and Coldplay
What embarrassing songs might I find on your iPod?
Well, I’ve got a lot of Spice Girls on my iPod. I just LOVE THEM!
If you weren’t singing, what would you be doing?
If I wasn’t making music, I’d probably be working in Marine Biology or something involving Outer Space.
What else can we expect from you in the future?
This year I’ve got big plans, including more collaborations with some of my favorite DJ’s, live shows, charity work, and fashion designs.
