Hailed by critics as “one of techno’s most sought-after acts of the decade” Space 92’s rise to superstardom has been meteoric to say the least. One of the best selling Techno artists in the world for the past three years, the prolific, in-demand Frenchman has achieved more in the space of a few years than most could hope to achieve in a whole career. Fresh off the back of his collaboration ‘Control’ with POPOF and UMEK, we sat down with the man himself to find out more.

Hi Mathieu, please tell us a little about yourself?
Hi, thanks for having me here today. I’m from the South of France and I’m 29 years old. I’ve been passionate about electronic music since my youngest age and I started to produce when I was 15 years old. I love sports and hiking … Well, that’s pretty much it!
We’re sure you have been asked this a million times but how did you get in the industry?
I started making music 12 years ago under a different moniker. This allowed me to build up my skills, travel around the world and consolidate my musical experience. When I started the Space 92 project two years ago, my remix of the Hungarian duo Twins Project – ‘Bass in your Face’ became Number One in the Beatport Techno Charts. This brought me a lot of visibility and I’ve kept growing since.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Catchy, metallic, energetic
Tell us about your new label
The idea of setting up my own label has been there since the beginning. I currently am still working on it in order to propose a finalized quality project with a real foundation and identity.
Do you have any releases coming up on the label you can share with us?
I’m currently working hard to finalize some new tracks in order to come up with a 3-track EP which will be hopefully soon be released on my label.
Which artists and styles have inspired and influenced you over the course of your career?
My main influences are artists like Stephan Bodzin, Umek, Tale of Us or Adam Beyer. Other music styles that are not necessarily Techno-affiliated have also been an inspiration to me and have allowed me to build up my musical background. I enjoy a lot of various genres, from Rock music to Pop music.
When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?
I try to sleep as much as I can, obviously, and I like to watch a good movie or go for a run in the outdoors around my house to completely clear my head and enjoy the moment.
Best stage you have ever played on?
Hard to answer this question … I think it would be the Family Piknik closing with Boris Brejcha. What an awesome event and stage that was.
What’s your favorite club to perform in?
For me, it’s the T7 club in Paris. I performed there for the first time with Adam Beyer in November 2021; it was a great night and the club is amazing. It has this 360 degree audience setting, it’s absolutely great and I loved it!
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
For me, the biggest reward is the many supportive comments I get from the fans, and also when I perform and I get to see the crowd’s reaction. That’s the biggest satisfaction I can have. As for the part that’s not as much fun, it’s an old classic: traveling, especially when you have long transits in airports. And of course, not spending as much time as you would like with your family.
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
I think the best advice I was ever given was to never give up. There are always ups and downs, so you have to believe in yourself and do what you really love and not try to copy a trend or something that’s working at the moment. You have to really believe in your own creativity rather than following a trend.
Name one your strengths?
I am very hardworking and I never give up.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
A good hike or run in the mountains
What is your favorite healthy food?
I would go for an avocado and tomato salad
And your favorite cheat food?
McDonald’s haha
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
This is a difficult question but I would say Stephan Bodzin, because he really is the one artist who ignited in me the desire to start producing.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I hope to go even further; in any case I will work very hard to achieve this goal.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I’d say casual. I’m quite a streetwear fan and I like wearing oversized T-shirts and sneakers.
What’s next for Space 92 in 2022?
Releasing a lot of new music – I have a new EP coming out soon on a prominent American label; working on beautiful collaborations, notably with HI-LO on Filth On Acid; and launching my own label at some point. In addition to touring a lot, haha.
