Hi Naté, please tell us a little about you?
I’m originally from Youngstown, Ohio. I grew up in Detroit with my mother and 2 younger sisters. After graduating high school I went to The American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC for musical theater. Before acting full time I was a model, video vixen, host, radio personality, dancer, production assistant, gaffer and anything else that would bring me closer to being in this business. I have a brand, Liberate Botánica, a wellness brand that specializes in using the earth to heal. Providing holistic herbs, bath products, and skincare. I also founded the women’s empowerment organization, Leaders in Lipstick.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Radiant, passionate, tenacious.
Who is your biggest supporter?
God. I would say my friends and family and my Agent next, but God gave me these gifts and has held my hand every step of the way.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Freedom.
How did you get started in the industry?
I got my start in this industry as a video vixen. The very first music video I ever did was the remix to “Drank In My Cup” by Kirko Bangz. That same summer Meek Mill cast me in both videos for “Amen” and “Actin Up” ft. Wale.
What was your first film?
My first feature film was “The Root of Things” written by Sade Sellers and Rasheed Stephens. A story about a young struggling hair stylist and her desire to change the narrative of Black hair and the standards of Black beauty. It is currently in post production.
What is the best and worst part of being an Actress?
The worse part is having to constantly gamble your fate and constantly being rejected, but the best part is that you learn self consciousness and self healing. You begin to put it into your work. Eventually healing yourself and the people hearing the stories your telling.
What advice would you give to those who want to be in this business?
Don’t be afraid to bet on yourself. See your vision, trust it, and chase it. One day you’ll look up and your vision WILL be your reality.
Best advice ever given?
The best advice given to me was from my grandfather, I call him Pa Pa. One day I was talking to him about everything I was doing and wanted to do and how much time I had to do it. He calmly said “what you can when you can baby…” reminding me to be patient with myself and to over extend myself because some things will come with time.
Tell us about your work on FX hit series “SNOWFALL,” and your role as Shon Shon?
I’m coming on season 3 as a newly introduced character and this is my first role and my biggest project. As you may the know SNOWFALL is a story of the crack epidemic in Los Angeles in the early 80’s. My character Shon Shon is a friend of Melody, Franklin’s neighbor and girlfriend. She’s a product of her rough environment. Proud and protective of the land crack cocaine and law enforcement are trying to strip from her and her people.
What other projects you have been part of?
“Kings of Style”, a short by AT&T paying homage to Dapper Dan, featuring ASAP Rocky and the NFL “We Ready” super bowl commercial and campaign. Numerous stage plays such as “A Raisin in The Sun” and “Jitney”.
Who is your favorite Actor/Actress? And why?
I have several, but the actress I pay the closest attention to is Bianca Lawson. I’ve always loved her choices and I admire that even though she is almost 40, she is still playing a young adult. That girl doesn’t age! I’ve always said that that would be my career, and here I am playing at 17 year old and I am a seasoned 20 something.
3 things you can’t leave your house without?
-wallet
-tigers eye bracelet by Red Period Co.
-lip gloss
What music do you like?
Anything I can get busy to, and by get busy I mean cut a rug.
Your idea of a perfect Sunday is?
Sleep in. Wake up to home cooked breakfast served by a fine ass shirtless man. Make love to the shirtless man. Have a little HERBS.. Go back to sleep. And repeat.
How’s a normal day in your life?
I’m not too much of a routine person so my life is different day to day, but I spend most of my time working on my wellness brand, auditioning, and creating. I also HAVE to get a little nature in my day. Whether it’s sitting in the sun or watering and talking to my plant babies.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Pickles. I love pickles.
And your favorite cheat food?
Anything high in carbohydrates.
What is next for Naté in 2019?
Besides knocking out a few personal goals, I am manifesting to star in my first feature film. A role that will not just give me a breakthrough personally but professionally as well. So if anyone has any projects they are casting… *wink wink*
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
It would actually be my grandmother. She passed away when my mom was 6. I would just want to spend one day with her to see what she was like and what advice she would give me.
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
Flourishing in my light; growing and glowing. (literally, trying to keep this skin on point!) Passing love and encouragement to my supporters, friends, and family through telling my truths and winning an academy award for my work.
Something people don’t know about you?
I’m the oldest of 4 girls.
Do you support any charities?
Yes, I actually have a women’s empowerment organization called Leaders in Lipstick.
