Hi Ella, please tell us a little about you?
I was born in Los Angeles but was raised in San Diego. My father is from the Netherlands and my mother was born and raised on the East Coast. I have eight brothers and one sister and I absolutely love having a big family. Growing up, I always loved photography and art but just recently got into modeling. Now I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Kind, laid back, honest.
Name one your strengths?
I’ve always done well in school. Before modeling, I had my sights set on college and majoring in STEM.
Best advice ever given?
“Be kind.” It’s simple but so so important.
Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
My family. Because I grew up with so many siblings my family has had a huge impact on the person I am today.
How and when did you start into modeling?
August 2019 was when I modeled for my first big company. A couple days after I managed to book my first swim runway show.
What is fun and rewarding about modeling? And what is not?
Oddly enough I think it helps with confidence. I love modeling and I feel good doing it. I also love the creative collaboration that happens on set but sadly it’s not all great. There’s a lot of rejection and judgement that goes along with it.
The most important thing when you are shooting is?
To be confident and to try and feel comfortable. I’ve seen that my best photo shoots were the ones where I felt the most comfortable.
What’s your advice for the newer models?
Practice poses and facial expressions in the mirror. It’s important to know your angles and be able to give the photographer a variety of poses.
What part of your job do you find the most challenging?
I would say the hardest part is keeping your morale up.
What’s next for Ella Kernkamp in 2020?
I’m hoping to spend some time in New York and get some work done there in the next couple of months.
Which magazine or project is still on your bucket list?
Definitely a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
In five years from now, where do you see yourself and your career?
I hope I will be a full time model. If not I’ll most likely be in college or graduating.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I enjoy salads and smoothies.
And your favorite cheat food?
Ice cream.
Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why?
My favorite model is Adriana Lima. She was the longest-running Victoria Secret model and named the most valuable angel in 2017.
How would you explain your fashion style and what items in your closet can you not be without?
I live by the beach so I have a very easy and laid back style. I definitely can’t live without my sweatpants.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
If I could choose one woman in history to have a conversation with I would choose Cleopatra because she knew how to use her intelligence to charm and persuade anyone.
What music do you like?
I listen to a lot of different music. I think I have a playlist for just about every genre.
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
A short and fun modeling job in the morning and then just relaxing the rest of the day.
