Hi Coco, please tell us a little about yourself.
I’m 15 years old. I am from California. I love music and have been singing since age 7. I used to be a competitive dancer growing up and I have been acting since a very young age.
Describe your sound in three words.
I don’t think I can describe my sound or style in three words. I’m still developing and finding my sound right now and my voice is still changing. I certainly get compared to other artists; however, I’m still young and don’t want to be put in a box. Music these days is changing, and styles and sounds are merging. I’m also a Gemini, which only complicates me further.
Who influenced you, and why did you choose to make music?
I grew up dancing and was surrounded by music in the studio and I have always loved how music has affected my mood. Singing was just another way of expressing who I was and another way to tell my story. My fans inspired me to continue by asking for more.
Tell us about your new single, “Better Type?”
I usually try to write my music based on stories that most people can relate too. I’m on TikTok a lot and so many girls are talking about their relationship problems. The long distances and excuses people give to end things are very relatable. I think the song speaks for itself. This is a song about a girl who loved a boy, and he made the easy excuse that long distance would not work and surprisingly, she saw him make long distance work with someone who was like her.
What’s the story and the creative process behind the song?
When I write a song, I usually write it about what I am currently feeling at that moment. So, if I’m in a sad mood, then that’s what the song’s going to be about. On the day I wrote this song, I was sad about something. Usually, I have a long drive to LA before my session, so I listen to music to get inspired on my drive and then I pull up my notes and start writing the general idea of what I want the song to be about. When I went into the session, I told the story and we started to find a piano chord progression, then wrote the melody along with the lyrics. With this song, we wrote the verse first to start with, then the chorus, and then the bridge.
I wrote this song with producer/songwriter Zach Sorgen and Rob Resnick further produced it as well.
Are there any artists or producers you dream of collaborating with?
Ryan Tedder or Dan Nigro would obviously be a dream. There are so many artists that would be a dream to collab with; however, at the top of my list, I love Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and Noah Kahan.
Have you had any mentors or key figures who have significantly impacted your career?
In the past, being younger, I did a lot of covers. Right now, I’m working on writing a lot of original music and finding my sound and style. So currently, I am working with a lot of different and new people, and it’s been so fun and eye-opening. I’m still learning so much.
How do you engage with your fans, and what role do they play in your career?
I would not be here if it were not for my fans. I feel like they have inspired me and supported me so much through the years. Sometimes I don’t talk a lot about myself on social media, but they always seem to figure me out.
How do you manage stress and maintain mental health with such a busy schedule?
I really try to take care of myself by eating healthy and working out but then there are the days where I like to facetime my friends and eat Hot Cheetos.
What’s next for Coco Quinn in 2024?
I’m coming out with an EP early in 2024 and plan to make lots more music. Performing is up on the list. Also, I still audition for acting roles that would be amazing as well.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car or for karaoke?
When I really feel like belting something out, I usually like older music by Demi Lovato or Katy Perry
