Hi Kate, please tell us a little about you?
My name is Kate Stewart, I’m a Capricorn from West London. I started off in musical theatre and drama and now I make R&B music for the soul, I sing my face off and I’m obsessed with Rihanna.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Sassy
An introverted extrovert
Headstrong
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I left my college early, where I was studying musical theatre. After a year there, I quickly realized it wasn’t actually for me, and I went to study music and songwriting. At the end of the year we had our graduation at an iconic music venue in London Shepherds Bush Empire, where I sang “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Hudson with my band. I was spotted by a manager there, who I then went on to work with. They put me on a tour with an electronic DJ duo called Bondax. We toured around the world for about 2 years on and off. Through them, I met a bunch of really cool producers and songwriters. We started making music, I started releasing, I signed to my first record label, and the rest is history!
How has this changed your life?
I always knew I wanted to be a pop star, so coming straight out of college and getting to live life on tour really set me up for a grounded future. Signing so young and it not working out also taught me a lot and I take it with me in whatever I do.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Bad Bitch
Screw your face and whine your waist
Gun fingers
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
So many people. But mainly, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. I choose to make music because it’s the only thing I feel really, really passionately about. I live and breathe music.
Do you play any instrument?
No, I wish!
Do you ever get nervous?
Not really, I only ever get nervous if a lot of my friends or family are in the audience. When it’s a room full of people I’ve never met, I feel very calm.
Tell us about your new video and single “The Game?”
This is a very special song to me as I wrote it with my brother, David Stewart, who also produced it, and a good friend of ours Jessica Agombar. It was such an easy and relaxed session, just like it is every time I work with them, but when the song was done all 3 of us were so excited about it.
I knew how I wanted the video to look immediately after writing the song. I didn’t want to take away too much of the focus from the actual music which is why I chose to have it be black & white. This song to me sounds like something from a movie soundtrack. It feels very epic and expensive, and with the styling + it being in black and white it pulls it altogether to this classy & epic visual.
What’s the story behind the song?
“The Game’s The Game” is something my friends and I always say to each other and I came to the studio with this and the rest is history!
What is the most rewarding part of your work?
When people tell you your music has helped them overcome something or helped them through something tough in their life. I just want my music to be repeatable and to help people.
What book should every entrepreneur read?
“The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and “It’s All in Your Head” by Russ
What would you say are the greatest lessons you learned so far?
Don’t take drugs.
What advice would you give to your younger self and why?
Don’t sign to a major label the first chance you get.
How would your best friend describe you?
Loyal, funny, sassy, loud.
If you are a book, what would be the title of the book and why?
“Why is my tummy always sore”
What’s next for Kate Stewart in 2022?
I have an EP coming out called ‘You Had To Be There’ which I’ve worked really hard on and I’m so excited for people to hear it. And hopefully a lot more live shows, performing life is my absolute favourite thing to do, I would live on stage if I could.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I eat very healthy most of the time. My favourite is an açai bowl and celery juice.
And your favorite cheat food?
McDonald’s!
How would you explain your fashion style?
I don’t really think I have one. I experiment with so many different looks. Most days I’m in a tracksuit and trainers. I love being comfy but I also love to dress up, and when I do, it’s mainly centered around the jacket. I love oversized clothes, suits and chunky boots, but I also love crop tops and low rise jeans, there’s always a nod to J Lo. I also never leave the house without hoop earrings.
What is your own definition of happiness?
Happiness to me is doing what you love and being around people you love and who lift you up. As long as you’re happy and stable in your work and with the people around you, everything else will fall into place.
If you could meet someone living or dead, who would it be and why?
Louis Theroux, I’m obsessed with him.
What would be the dream holiday, and who would you go with?
I don’t particularly like lying down in the sun and doing nothing for too long, I’m more of an explorer. So really anywhere I can go and do fun activities. I’m also a massive foodie, so I would need to be somewhere where the food is amazing. I also love parties, so somewhere with buzzy nightlife would be ideal. Tulum was the one place I’ve been that’s ticked all of the above. Going away with a big group of friends is always my favourite! My friends are wild and we always have a good laugh.
Best advice ever given?
My grandpa always used to quote Winston Churchill ‘never never never give up’ and that stuck as my family motto. Although it’s simple, it does exactly what it says on the tin, and even though my career so far has had many ups but quite a few downs, I will never ever give up.
Do you support any charity?
I support many charities, cancer research being my most prominent. I’ve lost family members to cancer, so I will do anything I can to help others going through it.
Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years from now?
Well hopefully I’m a massive superstar. I don’t do anything by halves, so I hope that I can get to a stage where I’m living my best life, selling out arenas, winning Grammys, starring in movies, getting billboard no 1’s, that would be my dream.
Favorite song? Why?
“I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston. It just makes me so happy. Whenever I am, if it comes on.. I’m dancing!
What do you think of Social Media?
I have a love hate relationship with social media. I love scrolling on it and seeing what people are up to and TikTok makes me laugh out loud A LOT, but if I didn’t have to have it or post on it for my music, I probably wouldn’t. I don’t find it toxic, but it’s a lot of effort and remembering to take pictures. I prefer living in the moment, rather than capturing it on my phone.
