Check out our interview with Neo Soul/Pop Kaua’i singer-songwriter Sierra Blax who just released her new single INYIM (It’s Not You It’s Me.)
INYIM is a playful admission to Sierra’s life being somewhat a hot mess as she navigates her mysterious mind through the city of LA, trying not to break any hearts, including her own. Her hook, “it’s not you it’s me” is a classic way of her saying “I got issues but get over yourself.” This track was produced with Tim Rose (cowriter and producer) and it features a tight rhythm section of Art Johnson on Drums (Skyler Steckler), Orlando Thompson on Bass (Eric Gales), Tim Rose on guitars (Allen stone, Sophistafunk), and D on keys.

Sierra, please tell us a little about you?
Hi guys! I’m Sierra Blax and I’m a singer-songwriter from Kaua’i, Hawai’i. I’m currently living in Los Angeles pursuing the independent artist thing and life has been quite a ride so far. I probably love surfing and cooking just as much as I love making music, but music is my main focus right now! I’m always striving to build meaningful relationships here in LA and surround myself with people sharing the same vibration.
Describe yourself in 3 words?
Chill, funny, sassy
We’re sure you have been asked this million times but how did you get in the industry?
I started my career in the music industry in Hawai’i, playing gigs around Honolulu! I was part of a duo band called RCNT ADXN (recent addiction) with Cory Mira. We used to have so much fun playing cover songs at bars and hotels.
Describe your sound in 3 words?
Melodic, playful, soulful
Who influenced you and why did you choose to make music?
I think what really got me inspired to seriously write songs was after Adele released her first album 19. I just felt so connected to her songwriting and to her vocals. I wanted to write songs just like hers, but I knew I had to find my own niche. So, I added comedic elements to sound.
Do you play any instrument?
Yes! I play guitar and the piano.
Do you ever get nervous?
Ugh yes… but once I get one stage it all goes away.
Tell us about the success of your single “INYIM?”
So far, I’ve gotten a lot of good feedback. There’s a few blogs that featured me on my page, which is the first time that’s happened for my music, so I feel very proud about it!
What’s the story behind the song?
“It’s Not You It’s Me” is an unapologetic song that plays with the idea of commitment phobia and independence. I’ve always loved the use of this phrase, and in this case, I wanted to use it as a way that felt playful and sassy, yet really giving honesty and reason to the “ME” in the phrase. Overall, I strongly feel like as females we don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why we choose to not be with someone, but I do feel like it’s good for ourselves to know why we don’t want it. So, I thought it would be interesting to really develop a narrative of flaws that give reason to why it’s ME and it’s not You. What you’ll hear in the verses is my testimony to why I can’t commit due to my insecurities and issues, yet at the same time just simply wanting to be FREE & INDEPENDENT! I think everyone can relate to the lyrics when you find yourself in a hot-mess or in an unrequited love all while having NO MONEY. I know it’s kind of specific but at the same time I’m sure most people have been through some kind of similar experience!
How was working with Tim Rose?
Tim and I have known each other for a while now, and have played shows together, so we’re used to working with one another – however, working on collaborations together is a new thing for us but we work really well together. We kind of got in a good flow these days, so we have for tunes coming out!
Did you had plans/concerts planned and cancelled because of COVID? If so have you done any online concerts or interaction with your fans?
Yes, I’ve had a few gigs canceled and I had plans to put together some cool shows for 2020, but it is what is it! BUT I had a live virtual show on February 27th.
Which project is still on your bucket list?
I definitely want to complete a full album one of these days. For now, I’m going to stick to putting out singles to get some traction, but my ultimate goal is to put out a full-length album and go on tour!
What is fun and rewarding about what you do? And what’s not?
I think the most rewarding thing about what I do is hearing the finished product of all my songs. Of course, the process of writing and collaboration is super fun, but it’s almost a euphoric feeling when you finish something you truly love. As far as what’s not fun, I would have to say nothing at this point. I’m super grateful to get to be doing what I’m doing and I hope I won’t ever get jaded by it.
Any loves other than music?
I love love love to cook. One day I would love to open up my own cafe/venue!
How’s a typical day in your life?
Well… My day-to-day life hasn’t really been consistent these days. Usually, during Covid, I would wake up and drink a cup of coffee, chat with my roomies, and then do a work-out to start my day. But now that things are a little more open, I find myself so busy having to work on music stuff during the day such as production and promo work, and then I bartend at night to make money for all of that. It’s tiring stuff but I love being busy. It’s so worth it!
Name one your strengths?
I can always find compassion for people!
Idea of a perfect Sunday?
A perfect Sunday would be an early morning of surfing and then breakfast at a cute cafe in Santa Monica or Culver City. Ideally just a pure relaxing day would be a great Sunday for me.
What is your favorite song to belt out in the car/for karaoke?
Favorite song to belt during karaoke would be “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel. Favorite music to belt in the car would be Beyoncé or Adele.
What is your own definition of happiness?
My definition of happiness is to be surrounded by things and people who love you unconditionally.
Do you support any charities?
Planned Parenthood.
What is your favorite healthy food?
I love a well-balanced veggie bowl with quinoa, avocado, and a soft-boiled egg.
And your favorite cheat food?
I have so many! Lol. I would have to say a late-night run to Leo’s Taco for a carnitas burrito.
What would be a deal breaker on a first date?
If he ordered a chocolate martini. (It’s happened before)
How do you see yourself in 5 years?
I would love to see myself with a few albums under my belt and hopefully on my way to owning my own home or paying off my parent’s home.
How would you describe your fashion style?
I definitely love to take fashion trends from the 80’s. I feel most like myself when I’m in a loose corduroy and crop top styled with a black leather jacket.
What do you think of Social Media?
Ughh… There are so many pros and cons to social media. As an independent artist, social media has helped me so much as an outlet to share my music without having a label be in control of that. I love how I can be in control of my own image and narrative through social media. It’s always a great way to stay connected and engaged with fans and friends around the world. However, I’ve had my fair share of negative experiences towards social media that, from time to time, put a damper on my mental health. I find that social media sometimes allows users to develop a skewed idea of self-image. I think it’s important for everyone, especially kids, to understand that what people post on their socials isn’t an exact representation of their lifestyle as people can choose to only post the pretty and not the ugly. I’ve been caught up in this social media dilemma, but now I’m much more aware of my activity with it.
